A friend who is interested in loading 45s for his 1911 on a small scale and I suggested he try a Lee Loader. Is there a powder that works particularly well with the scoop included with the loader and 230 grain bullets?

I've never used one, but I'd be surprised if Unique didn't have application.

I agree. Unique.

The kit comes with load data to show which powders work with the scoop. I think there are a few.

Read the instructions. The load data sheet that comes with the Loader lists several bullet sizes and powders. Along with the charges listed, a scoop/dipper size is indicated (in CCs).

Is that the .5cc dipper? If so it will probably only throw ~4.5gr of Unique. I'm not a big Unique guy, but that's a pretty light load. Maybe something faster like Bullseye.

I'd check the card though. Or you can download the powder VMD file from the Lee website and pull out the calculator.

The dipper that came with my Lee 45 ACP dies is .7cc which would be 6.4 gr of Unique according to the Lee dipper chart. Which would be 5.5 to 6.5 of Unique for a 230 gr Jacketed bullet. Cast L-RN would be less at 5.3 to 5.8 gr. Those according to Lee 2nd Edition, Lyman 49th and the older The Complete Reloader Guide to 45 ACP.

Dang. You guys are bringing back memories. In 1976 I was newly married. Wife, mortgage, bills, etc. I came to the realization that the only way I could afford to keep shooting was to reload. A Lee Loader, a pound of powder, some primers, and a bag of bullets and I was in business. Oh the memories.

Actually I have a RCBS chargemaster, but just bought the set of Lee dippers. My chargemaster has had issues with charges in the 5.0gr area. So just about all of my pistol loads have been problematic.
