For those of you that have a Springfield Trapdoor (TD) or for that matter, any antique “shooter” that has a pitted or damaged bore, you may be interested in the following article. I decided to have a TD carbine barrel relined and did a good bit of research on the subject, which you may find interesting. Click on the following link to the article:

leaded screw stock?
I think Ron Long used to make barrels out of that.
Lots of stories.

I'll quit while I am only in knee deep.

All the best.

Bobby has done a number of reline jobs for me including an 1816 smoothbore that nobody else would touch. His work is top notch. I'm thinking about sending him a TD to reline.

i worked for bob hoyt many years ago. learned a lot. when he puts his liner in you can not tell it. hr lines then reams and rifles the liner. 12l14 works just fine fo lead bullets.

12L14 would be leaded stock, Don't know what 12F14 is. Can't find any info.

Hi guys,

There was a typo in my article. I corrected it and it now reads 12L14, which, as Dragonrider pointed put, is leaded stock.

I just updated the article with comments from Lee Shaver about his simpler and much less time-consuming process to break in a new cut-rifled barrel.* Even if you don't intend to have a TD barrel relined, it's worth you time to read the article for Lee's comments.

Anyone have a "somewhere in the ball park" estimate of the cost for a full length rifle barrel reline?

Based on the quotes I received for the TD with 22" barrel, I'm guessing about $400 to $450 using the T.J.'s Liners for a longer barrel. It depends on the gunsmith, and don't forget shipping there and back.
