Hey guys. Today I stopped by the fun store to pay on a layaway and look around. In the used rack they had a somewhat worn but very functional Marlin 336 carbine in .30 WCF with the straight grip stock. The model of this carbine is usually the 336T or Texan, but this gun is only stamped 336. It includes Weaver scope bases and mounts and a leather sling and swivels.

They are only asking $285.00 for it. I've been looking for a good deal on this particular model for a long time. On Gunbroker they always fetch over $400.00 regardless of condition, even the Glenfield 30GT's go high. I already have a gun on layaway with them and don't have the cash to buy this one, however the owner said he is open to trades and agreed to hold it for me until the weekend. I'm going to pack up some guns I could spare and go back there tomorrow and see if we can make a deal. Wish me luck!!8-)

Any straight stock 336 is a 'Texan' regardless of if it has a 'T' in the roll stamp...

For that price, buy it...

Sounds like a very desirable rifle. I'd buy it if I had the opportunity.

Hi Salmoneye,

I know a fellow on Sarah's Creek whose sport fisherman is named "Salmoneye." Do you live in Virginia?

Take care, Tom

I wish you well with your idea of trading a couple weapons in for the one you want. Let us know how your trade turns out FergusonTO35. Again, Good Luck Sir.

Hahahhaahahaa !

I flipped a guy off driving down the road in Bucks County PA once because he had a VT sticker on his car !

I was thinking he was a Tech alumnist and my buddy in the truck called me an idiot and said it was for Vermont !

Of course in my defense we had just stopped at a roadside Tavern for light livations :veryconfu

Thanks. The shop is usually pretty reasonable, I'm going to see if he will do an even swap for my Ruger GP-100. It would be a good deal for him as the Ruger would definitely sell for more than $285.00.

Don'cha have something ELSE???

GP-100 in the stable is almost as necessary as a lever gun...

I don't have any guns he is interested in that I can part with. As much as I like the Geep it's too big and heavy for my use. I almost never shoot .357 in handguns, I much prefer my .38 +P reloads. What I really want is an S&W 67. I have an S&W 10-5 and a Ruger Service Six so I'm still covered in the wheel gun department.

I think the RC is Royal Canadian the last manufactor of those was 1963 I believe, I have a Texan RC in 35 Rem

Not only that, but I do believe that in a very short time you will find that you have come out way ahead of the deal...

Good Deal I would take a Marlin lever gun over a Ruger hand gun any day.

Nice! The Ruger might have a higher price tag, but I the Marlin was priced low. I never feel bad about trading something that can still be bought new for a fine old gun that is hard to find.

The Ruger might have a higher price tag,

It may for now, but...

Since the purchase of Marlin by Cerberus Group, the old JM Marlins have been steadily increasing in price...

Way to go there FergusonTO35 you got that 336. Are you intending to pull it down and clean up its internals. Or leave it be and just shoot it? Either way you got to get out real soon and warm that barrel up and see how it shoots now.

Thanks guys. Any straight stock 336 is an easy $400+ sale on Gunbroker. I've even seen Glenfields go that high. I've seen just the lower tang sell for $100.00. I'm going to install an Ashley ghost ring receiver sight and white stripe front. For now I'll just scope it since the bases and rings are already installed. I hope it likes cast boolits 'cause that's what I'm gonna feed it!! Pics will be forth coming.

Yes from the late 40's to the early 60's "RC" stood for "regular carbine" same as "SC" stood for "sporting carbine" .

I had five of the Sporting Carbines at one point !

My 5 were made in the time from 1950 to 1962 . pair of 30-30's , 32 Special , 35 REM and a 219 Zipper .

GOOD LUCK..! Any Marlin under $300 is a DEAL where I am. A straight stock Texan for that price is a STEAL! I'd have it already. If you don't like it, you could resell and get your money back on the Marlin forum or Gunbroker like you mentioned.

RC = regular carbine, and it is a "Texan" also.

Yes it's regular carbine, same as the 35 Rem that sits beside it, but, since I'm an Okie and it dont say Texan, I'm sticking with RC.

No 'Texan' ever said 'Texan' on it...

They never put "336T" on them either !

They "claimed" "444T" meant 444 Texan which is good and fine . But of my accumulation of old Marlin's in 444 only three of them have the "444T" roll stamp and those are only from the guns made in 1971 and 1972 . And thats not to say all the rifles made in 1971 had the "444T" rollstamp because they don't !

No 'Texan' ever said 'Texan' on it...

I have to qualify that after rereading it...

No 336 'Texan' ever said 'Texan' on it...

There was an 1894 Cowboy octagon barrel that was rolled 'Texan' on the barrel...

This gun has a Micro Groove barrel. What boolit diameter would you recommend for it?

I shot the Ranch Dog 311-165GC in about all of the 30-30 Marlin's I owned be it Micro or ballard !

With wheelweight alloy I got my best results running them thru a .312" sizing die .

I've never slugged a 336 in .30-30...

The only .336 I have is a 1958RC in .35 Remington that loves hard cast .358" 158 grain 'pistol bullets'...

The only .30-30 I own is a 1893 made in 1912 that I have only fired jacketed in...

This is a guy over on MarlinOwners running some cast through his Winchester...

FWIW , the scope base on that rifle is the older 63B base thats a bit longer then the ones you can buy new now !

I made a point of buying a bunch of the old Weaver 63B bases for use on my 444's !

There's nothing wrong with jacketed bullets .

I shoot cast exclusively in my lever actions because I choose to do so .

I shoot jacketed exclusively in my single shots and bolt actions because thats my choice as well .

Before i had the great selloff of 2009/2010 I used to have duplicate lever action rifles so I could shoot jacketed in one and cast in the other .

FergusonTO35

I'm not trying to give anyone a hard time about jacketed by any means. This is just one of the few places where people take cast boolits seriously, not just as cheap practice slugs. The ammo companies have done a fantastic job convincing most people that good hunting bullets have to expand to 5X diameter and cost $5.00 each. For the record I do prefer jacketed exclusively in high velocity bottleneck rounds.
