Yep, although I cast and have shot cast boolits for years, am just starting into my third season shooting my own cast boolits from a RUGER #1s and as of this morning have taken my second elk and 5th cast boolit game animal. [smilie=w:

The boolit was the same as last year, a 465gr WFN from a Babore mold - Thanks Bruce!! - shooting a CCI BR2 (just happen to have some) and H335, and Starline brass.

Using as per Bruce's recommendation, a 50/50 - WW/lead alloy and pushing the boolits along at 1600 - 1700fps.

Yes, still impressed with the cast WFN and hope to add a couple of deer to the RUGER'S total come October & November. :bigsmyl2:

Keep em coming!

CDOC: I am with you on the great 45-70 cartridge. I can only claim one medium size MO whitetail buck with my No.1, but I can truly say it did the job very nicely. Seems you have found a deadly combination. Congradulations on another nice elk. I would like to see some pictures if possible.

I kinda like 45/70's myself. Top is a Browning B78. Next down is a "pre-guide gun" my wife had chopped and gave me for Christmas, early 80's. Then a CB, Then a LTDlll, a standard rifle, a stainless guide, and the last is a "Remlin" GBL

I tried downloading image files, and think my files are too big as they won't down load.

Now, not likely to set my camera to a lower resolution, as being an old professional photographer I have this thing about image quality.

However, tried to see how I could make changes on the pooter to make the images compatable, and sorry still need the loan of that 4 year old to help me get er done.

As soon as I get the vintage 336 shooting cast a nice old 45-70 is on my list.

Ya, it's so bad, that I have even sent images to others and they have posted them for me!

That's bad!!

That is how my photographs of my Under Bench Receiver System ( system for reloading tool mounting ) got on line.

It was still there when I googled it a week or so ago, but I had help or it wouldn'g have gotten done!

Don't wait too long for that 45/70, they are game tak'in machines to the max!

CDOC I got a few pounds of D76, lots of paper and an Omega 4x5 enlarger if that 'll help

WOW robroy, it took me a few to reconnect with the "D76"!

If not for the Omega 4X5 enlarger it might have been longer.

Guess it gives some indication as to my age that I even relate at all.

We closed up our photography business in mid 1982 and I was then in retail, over the counter sales in a photography department for about 3 years. That has been awhile.

Knowing what your talking about, in part explains why I have some issues with Pooters. For example getting things reduced in file size so I can down load to the forums.

Being in the business might also helps explain why I shoot digital at max. resolution which in turn makes my digital files quite large.

Guess I have a thing about quality and still think in quality terms of medium film formats and Kodachrome 25. Just can't bring myself to shoot at lower resolution then max.

Thanks for the laugh!

The 45/70 is what brought me to this forum. I saw a H&R Buffalo Classic at a local shop for a pretty good price, and it followed me home:

http://dademoss.smugmug.com/Other/Rifles/i-jTCWndN/0/L/DSC5481-L.jpg

I got my start with .58 muzzle loaders and although I have shot plenty of smokeless , my real joy is with black powder and cast bullets.

I ordered a press and dies, next step is to slug the barrel and order a nice casting mould , some BP and primers and get this show on the road.

I shot mostly black and white with either panatomic-x or plus-x in 35 mm. I do indeed appreciate fine grain and high resolution. Dad did the 6x4.5 format. neither one of us got into view cameras. Done hijacking.

I just got 45-70 Handi. Maybe it'll turn out to be my favorite too.

Yep I hear ya robroy, totally off the subject, but our work gear was the 6X4.5 and the 6X7 for portraits, weddings & commercial, other that is then the 35mm in kodachrome.

Loved Pan-X, but there was a high resolution copy film, that if souped correctly gave a full gray scale and blew Pan-X away for sharpness.

Back to the subject!

Just wait until you guys get the chance to take a critter with your 45/70.

Half of this elk is cut up, and the remaining hind quarters should follow in the next two mornings. :bigsmyl2:

Sure is hard not to fall in love with #1 Ruger 45-70's. Bought mine in Alaska in 76 I think, and shot it open sighted for a couple of years. Put 40 rounds thru it today in fact. Mine loves 2400 under most any bullet with a dac filler. Even loves to shoot multi round ball loads for fun out to 25-50 yds. Yep, great ctg and great rifle!

Dademoss, welcome to the place. You are off and running. What you have and what you have planned shows you are off on the right foot. It seems you have been reading the stickies and that is a very good place to start.

I hear ya ol' Coot !! I got pictures of my seventies vintage lever 45/70 that I took with an old Cannon AE-1 . Even when my beloved bought me a new Kodak digital camera I have to take the card into town to get pictures . The other forum I visit is about the only place I've been able to post photos but recently there was a change in the size pictures they accept . Soooooo .... I have to go through all of my Photobucket account and resize everything if I want to post

I never have poked a hole in venison ribs with this 45/70 bot when I take it out to hunt paper it responds right nicely .

Ya know a fella would think an old retired guy would have all the time in the world to figure out what the 'puter wants you to do . But noooooo , I'd rather be out shooting or casting or something wastefull like that [smilie=l:

I too am a fan of this grand old cartridge. My gun is a H&R Handi synthetic stock. I shoot 405 gr cast bullets on top of 30 gr AA5744, which gives me velocities in the low to mid 13's, according to the folks at Accurate.
Given the Handi's light weight of 6-3/4 lbs, it stomps me pretty good but I love it.
Long live the .45-70!

190 yards verified by two range finders. I have had a Handi Rifle in 45/70 which I traded off when I had a original Model 5 Rolling Block re barreled from 7mm to 45/70. Made a mistake with that one put on a 32 inch full octagon barrel it was nice to shoot but not handy to hunt with. Traded that and 50 bucks for the new guide gun in 45/70 it is now my deer gun unless I am over looking a slashing larger than 200 yards then I will use my 6.5 Swedish Mauser. Scope is a 1.5 x 4.5 Weaver. Perfect scope for a 45/70 and a woods rifle. Load is Lee 405 grain hollow base and 24 grains of 2400. The rifle was sighted in at a 100 yards I aimed just over a foot over her back as we figured the drop would be about 24 inches. at 190 yards. She was coming into bait and we had set up and ranged the distance to the feeder before she showed up. In a field open shooting all the way. Bullet broke that front leg that is lifted up and went through the heart and out the other side. First deer with the guide gun I shot her three years ago. Have not had another chance since The DNR has screwed up the deer seasons with their unlimited doe tags that it has gotten progressively worse in the past 4 years. You cannot give out unlimited doe tags for well over a decade and not have it come back to bite you. It is why Gov Walker hired Dr. Kroll to see what could be done. I hope it will get better and I can make good use of the guide gun again. But I fear it is gonna take a few years to get the herd back some what. Sorry about the rant but when you see the less and less deer every year it is frustrating and the DNR promises to listen to us hunters and still do what they want to do. This fall there is no unlimited tags up north here but there is more then enough bonus tags at 12 dollars a pop.

Im going to take my marlin 45 70 antelope hunting this year. I'm 7" low at 200 yards but I should be able to get closer being patient. We have almost tripped over a few of them. We can usually get it done in two days with scoped rifles. There will be enough around if I need one.

Good Luck with the Hunt What load are you using to be 7 inches low at 200 yards and what range are you sighted in for? I been thinking maybe of a lighter bullet but that hollow base Lee I use works so well.

Zero at 125 yards. 48.8 gr of H4895, 400 gr Accurate boolit 46 405R at 1730 fps. 60-40 stick on clip on ww, heat treated. Should be great for antelope. I used that alloy on deer last year. Left nice holes. John
