Hello Folks,

Yesterday I shot this group at 100 yards, hand held at the shooting bench with the left hand resting on a block of wood. The 66 caliber balls weigh one ounce, and are propelled by 140 gr of Diamondback FFFg blackpowder. The patch is 0.015” cotton duck lubed with Ballistol. Velocity is 1400 fps. The sights are very tight in the dovetails, and I’m not going to take a chance on loosening them to take out the little bit of right error. It’s too small to worry me. Steve Zihn built this Rigby-pattern rifle for me several years ago.

Take care, Tom

Veerry Nice! I like it. Nice rifle, beautiful stock, and a darn good group. I'd call it good if it were mine and if the distance had been 50 yards! That is a chunk of lead.

Doing good! There should be no problem drifting the sight over a bit.

Unless you're planning to use it as a squirrel rifle, you're good. Beautiful rifle.

Gorgeous wood there. I'd like to see the whole thing. Good shooting too, for just an elbow rest.

Beautiful! An English 16 bore stalking rifle, now that's the perfect muzzle loading elk rifle. A friend has a Purdy 16 bore rifle that he says hit's bull elk harder than his 340 Weatherby. For several years I've been saying I was going to build one just like it, but other projects have kept me too busy. Guess I need to re-prioritize my projects list.

Have you shot any game with it?

That is what a hunting rifle should be! I would love dearly love to spend some time in Africa with a rifle like that. That is what hunting dreams are made of....

Now that is a rifle I wouldn't want!! I know sooner or latter I'd put a little dent or ultra tiny scratch on it and end up crying myself to sleep every night from then on.
Yes in de-dee sure is pretty.

Thanks one SLICK rifle. How much does it weigh?

The weight is 8-1/2 pounds. It kicks a little, but it's not a target rifle. Thanks.

What is the rifling twist?

It is a nice looking rifle and I hope you get it out hunting.

What is the rifling twist?.

Actually, I'm not sure of the twist. It is difficult to measure as the rifling is shallow, and the barrel probably has less than half a turn. Whatever it is, it seems to be appropriate.

It is a nice looking rifle and I hope you get it out hunting.

Absolutely. I haven't shot a deer with a centerfire rifle in years. The hodge podge of regulations governing the use of cartridge guns here in Virginia has all but taken the fun out of hunting with them. But we can use a muzzleloading rifle in every county and even some cities anytime the deer season is open for any type of gun. It's the only way to go! It's also much more satisfying.

Thanks, Tom

I am anticipating my .62 from Steve. Still have a year to go on the waiting list. About the only difference besides caliber is I specified a 2 leaf apeture rear, and a target weight of 9 lbs.

is it .62 conical gun or for RB?

RB. Large bore conicals are pretty much useless for hunting, IMO. Most folks don't have any idea how well a .58"+ round ball will penetrate, especially if it is hardened a little bit. A .62 PRB moving 1500+fps has enough punch to knock anything in the Western Hemisphere on its butt. 200gr of FFg will get it moving nearly 2000fps.

And yes, I know that Idaho Ron has a good load worked up for his .50 with conicals. It pretty much exceeds a .50-100 Sharps in performance. I just choose a different path, mostly because I like to shoot a LOT, and would rather spend my time at the range shooting instead of cleaning. Using the right patch and lube, I can shoot literally all day and clean the gun when I get home.

Have you talked to Steve? He might be able to hook you up with a buyer, given that his backlog is about 2.5 years right now, he probably knows somebody that would be interested in buying it without having to wait in line.

With that piece you could bark squirrels and get fire wood at the same time.

I looked at Zihn's web site yesterday and didn't see this rifle listed. I'll just say it did catch my eye and I was wondering if it was available and the price.
