I was given a couple of boxes of brass that I was told were .300 Win Mag. When I looked at them closer I knew right away they were too long. The head stamps are either ".300 Magnum" or ".300 H&H Magnum"; obviously a wildcat round made by fireforming in a bigger chamber.

The old boxes they came in, Winchester Silvertip Superspeed .300 H&H Magnum, had reloader labels on them with a date of 1955, way before my time. I just thought it was interesting, looks bigger than the Weatherby round. I just threw it all in with a bag of .300 Weatherby brass I have. I would expect it could be easily reformed into .300 Weatherby, but I doubt it's desirable brass to reload because it's mixed headstamp that has likely been reloaded an unknown number of times.

I was at Ackley's shop in the late seventies, and saw some white boxes hand labeled "Winchester-Western 300 Ackley Magnum". He worked with Winchester to get them to produce the FL 300 Ackley Magnum, but some bean counters convinced WW that the short(er) 300 Win Mag would be less expensive to produce. No logic to that, since all of the old model 70's were built on one action, from 22 Hornet to 300/375 H&H.

I could not get a sample round for love or money. I even offered to marry his daughter! She vetoed that offer.

I gave my 300WM 700BDL a workout with 180Gn Remington Core-Lokts Factory ammo on Monday. I reckon it is powerful enough, lol.
