Hello Folks,

Do you know if Winchester ever made a Model 94 with a button magazine and shotgun butt plate chambered for the 38-55 cartridge?

Take care, Tom

yes they did. i have a 94 carbine with saddle ring and button mag in .38-55.

look at the underside of the barrel 4 1/8" from the muzzle to see if there is a filled spot. if not then the button mag. is right.

back in the day winchester was in business to sell rifles. they had a long list of standard special oder features. shotgun but. button mag. part round barrels. single and dubble set triggers.

I have seen it in all chamberings - .25-35, .32 WS and 30-30 as well. Have seen it in both shotgun butt and carbine butt - with and without Saddle Ring. !892 done in the same configuration.

Thanks fellows. I've asked my local gunshop owner to start looking for one for me. If he can't find one in a reasonable amount of time, do you guys know a good Winchester 94 smith who could build one from a run-of-the-mill 30-30? I'm a shooter, not a collector, so I'm not too concerned about authenticity.

That came to a screeching halt in 1924 when the Model 55 was introduced. It became the custom/special order variant of the Model 94. After the Model 55 was introduced there were no more rifles or special features offered in the Model 94. 20" round barrel carbines with shot gun butt became the norm, until commemoratives started being introduced.

there was an outfit that had a partround rifle barrel with button mag and forearm i got one and put it on a post 64 carbine. only i used the carbine mag to give a 2/3 mag. the only problem is i think it was .30-30 only.

Here is what I'm looking for, either as an original gun or a custom modification.

pre-64
38-55 caliber
button magazine
rifle, 26" preferred
shotgun butt plate
good barrel
good overall condition
round, octagon, or half round all okay
pistol grip preferred, but straight grip okay

Thanks, Tom

I had a .32-40 button magazine and shotgun butt, and had a heck of a time selling it. Every prospective buyer didn't think it "looked right". Most guys get their ideas of what a lever action rifle should look like from TV westerns.

Yes, I know. When I was 12 my parents let me pick out a shotgun at the GEX, to be my Christmas present that year. I immediately selected an Ithaca M66 Super Single 12 ga (lever action, straight stock, tip-up), which I still have. My first centerfire rifle was a Marlin M336 30-30, chosen for the same reason, and which I also still have.

Howdy, Guesser,

Winchester continued to produce the 1894/94 rifle alongside the Model 55 until the end of rifle production, circa 1931, with parts clean-up trickling a few more rifles out of the factory as late as 1933. Robert Renneberg, in his book Winchester Model 94, A Century of Craftsmanship, 2nd Edition, states on p. 238, "The last recorded Model 94 rifle was serial 1,090,649. It is dated 6/1933."

And not all of the Model 94 rifles made during Model 55 production were lacking in special features, either. One of my model 94 rifles was made in 1927, serial number 1,008,XXX. It is a standard rifle -- crescent butt, straight grip, 26" full octagon barrel, full magazine, chambered in .30 WCF. But it has three special features, also -- stainless steel barrel, Marbles Reversible front sight, and Winchester Close-Coupled Set triggers.
