Any of you 480 Rug.shooters notice a liking of mag primers in yo guns??
I did a test and the only change I made was the primer
the test included 22.2 gr.h110 and a 400 gr.LBT Wfn I switch between cci 300 and 350's
by far the best groups were had with the mag primer
anyone else have similar results ?

I have ladder loads loaded wating to be worked up using cci mag and winchester.
So far I've not been real happy with the reg primers as the accuracy Isn't what I want at 50 yards, so here will be a side by side test.
Will get back to you maybe later this week on my results.

It is case size. The .480 is large enough for the LP mag primer and that will give the best accuracy.
Even the .454 cut for a LP primer shot much better with a mag.
The .475 and most .500's do great with a LP mag.
I go to standard with the .44.
I have always believed you need enough case capacity to absorb primer pressure and give good ignition without moving the boolit just from the primer.
You did good testing and it is great to find things like that.
Now remember, changing powders can reverse it. Reduced loads of other powders might not like a mag primer.

:bigsmyl2:I was using rem large with the Rcbs bullets you sent me and I was getting just over a inch I had one of these:bigsmyl2: which is pretty good considering how poorly I felt. they didn't seem to work as good with those wfn you sent but that could be my load as well. At the time I only had a small amount of 2400. since I've bought some more 296 and have been loading them to 21 with the lee 400.

I made some minor changes to your 420gr design and ordered it this morning so when I get a few cast up I'll send them your way to see what think.

Honestly I've always used cci 350's to light of H-110 in the 480 as it's a difficult powder to ignite. My accuracy has always been excellent so I haven't bothered try different primers.

My suggestion is stick with 350's for H-110, and vary your powder charges to get the smallest group.

I've always stuck with CCI 350's for lighting H100/296 in the 480. Both CCI 300's and Win LP gave less than stellar accuracy.

I shot a few today using a remington lp primer I'm not sure if it counts as a mag primer or not. My first load was 20.5 and the best I did was 1.5 inches at 25 yards I shot only one cylinderful of 21gr of 296 but by that time I was pretty tired and my group was more of a pattern. I do plan on giving the 350's a try as it's been about 15 years since I used them. I have always had good luck with winchester but they were all out and I have had good luck with them in the heavier .45colt loads

When my 480 was scoped and my hand was steady, 5 shot 50yd groups were 1". That was for the 390, 400, 410 gr cast all over 21gr H-110 lit off with a CCI-350. I tried a bit more and a bit less powder, but groups would open up.

Still very good shooting. If you can't find 350's try Fed 155's. WW for both standard and mag also do good.
The .480 is a wonderful round but I believe it does work better with mag primers.

white eagle you are right about the cci 350's. I used 20gr of 296 and the 420v from Tom. I love it when a gun load combo makes me look like I know what I'm doing. I also tried the 350's with the 45-340e and 21gr of 296 and again the combo made me look good

Using regular pistol primers and H 110 I had many hang fires or bullets lodged in the barrel...no problems with magnums....
