OK I have never used 2400 in the 30/30. I have used it in my 308 and 7.5 Swiss. Shot good in the 308 Encore Pistol useing 18 grains and I have to try some more loads in the 7.5 probably will try 18 grains there too. Before I shot them unsized and I think now that I have sized them at .309 they will shoot even better. At least be more uniform. So what are your expiriences with the 30/30 using 2400? I have heard some here say 16 grains what does that give you for a vel using a 180 + bullet? I have a full new bottle of 2400 to expirement with. Any other suggestions for powder for a general 30 cal use as in the above 3 calibers?

My notes indicated the following velocities. Still working on a load myself.

Lyman 311041 @.309" , Winchester 94, 20" barrel
14.0g 2400 1567 fps
15.0g 2400 1653
16.0g 2400 1730

Sounds like the 16 grain load would be ok for a deer load. What kind of groups you getting?

So far right around 2"-2.5" for 5 shots at 60 yards with a peep sight, three or four close and one or two flyers in each group.

Neck tension on that batch was too light. I had over-expanded the case necks for .309" bullets.

Plan to try a tighter case neck with .309 bullets and bullets sized to .311. The plan is to work with it until I get group size down to a consistent 1.0-1.5" at 60.

There are quite a few good "cast load recomendations for 30-30" threads here. You might want to try searching for a few of them.

I hope the .309 sizing works for me I shot them unsized at first to see what that would do and figured it could be inproved by resizing. I used a Lee Universal Expanding die for the necks and will be using the Lee Factory Crimp die for the crimp.

I shoot 16.0 gr 2400 in 30-30 and have done so for years. I used to shoot 17 gr but the newer 2400 seems a little hotter but I believe is a little more accurate. I shoot it 30-30 Marlin Cowboy which when testing with scope is very capable of 1-1/2 at a 100 with Lyman 311291 or the 311041 both gas check. Sized to .309 and with LBT Blue or Lyamn Super Moly leading is non existent. I have to back off with my Marlin with Micro Groove barrel. the only thing is that youi can double charge, so be careful. 21 grain in 30-40 Krag with same bullets is a are real gong ringer to. I use WW with extra tin to 2% or Lyman #2 for the best groups. Both I'm sure are too hard for hunting.

Thanks for the info. I will try some 16 grain loads using my bullets sized to .309 and lubed with LLA. For my 7.5 Swiss I am thinking of trying some loads at 20 grains of 2400. It is interesting that my old Lyman 42nd edition has quite few uses of 2400 for cast bullet loads then when you get to my 45th and 47th editions (these are the only three I have of the Lyman books) they dropped using 2400 entirely????????? I wonder why. C.E. Harris on the other hand had nothing but good to say about the 2400 in Military Cases and cases larger than the 300 Savage though he does say 16 grains makes a good full power load in the 7.2 x39 so I am not worried about using it in the 30/30.

I use 17 grains behind a 311041 gas checked and sized to .311. I get 1750fps with Winchester and RP cases. I get about 1825 with Federals. Must have different case capacities. As far as accuracy, I can get 1 to 2" groups at a hundred yards through my 1968 20" microgroove 336. I love this load.
