I am new to the gas check and to pan lube.

My equipment

.452 300g conventional lube lee Boolit mold
.452 sizer die , bore slugged at 451
45 hornday gas checks
Pan
Lube
Cutter From an old lee pan lube kit

I know the sizing die crimps the gas check on but how do I run it through the sizer unlubed as the directions say not to? I tried just placing the checks on and they were crooked. Do I lube without a check and then place prior to sizing? or do I Tumble lube a little first then put the checks on and size then pan lube?

A little help is needed

Thanks in advance

I use Imperial Sizing Wax to lube my bullets when I put them through the Lee sizer to put on the gas check. Then I pan lube them and run them through again.

I tumble lube with LLA, size and seat the check with a Lee sizer, and then pan lube. I use a modified Ben's Red.

I first lube the non-checked bullets with Alox. Then add check snd size, and then re-lube the bullets. No problems so far.

I li\lightly heat the Alox just a I use it to lube. It seems to give me a better lube

First batch is cooling now.

There is a lot of effort required to size and crimp the check on.
So much I am almost thinking of a larger sizer die just to put the checks on

I tumble lubed first then sized, then in the pan

Need a couple more crayons in the mix, baby blue bullets don't look so menising

Once you get them loaded, the lubed area looks like brass. :groner:
Really shiny brass in my case.

I set my checks entirely differently.
I fumble-bumbled around but quickly found a "Bullet Proof" method. You might or might not be able to use it.
I found a bunch of plastic trays in one of the cans at the range and gathered them up. I think they might have been for 9mm ammo. I use them for 30 cal cast for my rifle.
You could easily adapt my method to your needs. I do 45 ACP 230g, but no need to check those.
I use hobby tubing from my local hardware store, and stuff in my shop.

I put the checks in the cups (http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa382/Sonnypie/Gas%20Checks/PA270288.jpg), set a bullet, then slide my shop made brass tube down so it guides the bullet and the slight flare at the bottom holds the gas check in alignment. Then a 5/16" bolt drives the bullet into the check with everything in alignment. Tap-Tap and the bullet and check are assembled. (http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa382/Sonnypie/Gas%20Checks/PA270294.jpg)

These bullet/check assemblies are then transferred into the trays (http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa382/Sonnypie/Boolit%20Gloob/california_nut_loob3.jpg) I use to dip them 50 at a time into my dip lube crock pot (http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa382/Sonnypie/Boolit%20Gloob/california-nut-loob1.jpg).
When the lube cools (usually in a few minutes) I cut them from the dip tray and eject them into a loaf pan for sizing. After they are rammed through the Lee sizer, the check is set, the lube is set in the lube grooves, and the little hooters are ready for final cleaning (http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa382/Sonnypie/Boolit%20Gloob/loob_tools3.jpg) and ready to load or store. (http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa382/Sonnypie/Boolit%20Gloob/california_nut-loobed_boolits.jpg)

Feel free to browse the photo bucket files of my madness. :bigsmyl2:

I seat and size unlubed (base first, polished dies) then pan lube.
The added benefit is loose gas checks will separate when pulling the bullet from the wax pan.

I wondered the same thing as I gas checked for .357 but I pan lubed then gas check/sized and all lube rings look good. I am a little concerned as I havn't seen one individual say thats how they do it.
I plan on loading a few and see how they preform. Good luck to you

I have wondered the same thing as the OP. It seems a lot of you agree it's OK to use LLA prior to sizing/seating checks, then pan lube. But do you clean it off before pan lubing? Does the LLA contaminate the pan lube if you don't?

A bottle of spray case lube solves your problem. Squirt with lube, apply gas check and size, then pan lube or invest in a gas check seating tool made by the Perfessor.

I do the RanchDog method and WD40 spray them before Sizing/checking them. Then pan-lube or Dip-lube, and put them through the LEE sizer again before I load 'em up.

I've got an oily rag, each time I use it I just add a few more drops of virgin olive oil to it.
Rub over a pile of bullets with the rag (they don't need much) then run them through the sizer before pan lubing them. Then I seat the PB check, thereby giving my bullets a nice clean bum that the powder won't be effected by.
