I would like to know the exact width of the clip from these rifles if anyone has one. I don't think caliber should make any differance but if it does a 308 or 6mm should work. Sorry for the bother but I am committed to turning a carcano into a bottom loader.

all I have is 223 cal magazines for it.

why did you pick the rem 788 magazine? It's one of the more difficult ones to find now days.

Blammer , Maybe because it's a single stack . It seems to me making it feed from two directions might be a chore .

The magazines have a rib at the front that limit forward/rearward motion of the cartridge in the magazine. How close to the shoulder length of the 308 and 6mm cartridges is the shoulder location of the carcano cartridge?

Just checked some things and found that a 6.5 cal loaded with a 140gr. RemPSP will not fit the 308 magazine when crimped in the cannalure.

The magazine dimensions on the Rem 788 are the limiting factors, and mine (22-250 and 243) are different in length. The 22-250's max cartridge OAL is 2.400", so re-boring my shot-out 22-250 barrel to 250 Savage was a no-go.

If you'd like, I can provide dimensions for my 243 mag. Lemme know.

what about using an m1 carbine mag? 788s are pricey when you do find one. or a m16 mag? you could glass the magazine in the stock and load it down thru the receiver. might have to open the rails on the carcano, but if you can locate a magazine far enough up into the action that the bolt will pick a round up, you could glass it permanently to the stock in the correct position.

thanks for your bother gentlemen but I solved the problem today by getting the bottom of the mag to swing down. The sav 340 clip is too wide and I believe this is my easiest way to make a bottom feeder. Soldered ribs in rails and so far so good. Sorry to bother you all!

Sounds like an interesting solution. When finished please post some images and description or tutorial.
I'm always interested in such special projects even if I may never have need of this sort of conversion.

788 mags seem to freely available in Australia. There are two shops in the next State that regularly advertise them for $75 from memory. My mate used one tack welded inside a No4 7.62 conversion. Worked fine apart from only having three shot capacity (or you might say lack of capacity, lol).

every thing is done except bluing and waiting for spring from midway. I will post this beginning of next week on special projects. It really makes for a slick carbine in my thoughts. The caliber is 7.62x39 and that would not feed thru clips hence need to change direction of feed.

Wow a $75 magazine to convert a milsurp, that's pretty steep. Might be better to copy the mauser box magazine conversion like they did on the styers. Or check out the mauser detachable magazine conversion unit offered by Brownells.

Got a link for that? I can't seem to find it.

The Magazine we used was an old one that had a bit missing, still worked but a bear to remove from the 788. It was just tacked into place inside the original magazine and works a treat. It turned a single shot 308/7.62, which had limited value into a repeater using a popular round.

Sterling magazines which were traditionally used to convert No4s to 7.62 are pretty much non existant and the only one I have seen for sale was in England and was 180 or 280 pounds! I can't remember, but basically worth as much as an a mint No4.
