Picked up a press that a guy's Dad made in a machine shop he worked in. Only loads one size, Mauser based (8mm, .30-06 and a few others) cases.

Hope the shellholders don't wear out too soon.

Yes, there is a #1 stamped on top of both of the shellholders. The one with the knurling has 7/8"X14 threads on the outside and is also threaded on the inside. The other one is drilled for a setscrew on the sides and has this priming pin assembly thru the middle of it.

Wow!
What does it weigh?

What does it weigh?

About 3 or 3 times the weight of my Lyman Turret press.

That is the first rack and pinion reloading press that I can remember seeing. Looks like it should work okay.

Newtire, the shell holders and priming pin are Old style Lyman J type. Like you would find on a Tru-line jr or a All American. I do not know about the screw in one.

The good news is that lyman sells a J to X adapter (part #7095762) that will allow the use of standard shell holders. You can also find J type holders on E-bay or @ the 310 shop. The priming pin is also often seen on E-bay.

This is very interesting press, a few more pics would be nice.

If the guides for the racks are strong enough, it would probably be great as a swaging press.
Some slight mods for swaging may be necessary but I am sure the amount of force that thing is capable of is amazing.

I knew I could get some answers here! So, looks like it has two kinds of shellholders. The screw-in one seems to be a Herters and the other one then is probably a Lyman. According to the Herter's info, I will never have to worrry as their stuff never wears out.

I used to love reading the stuff in their catalogs. I got some of their decoys and we had our limit of ducks in 1/2 hour on opening day. The guys next to us didn't get a one. Needless to say, they weren't using Herter's decoys!

I just thought it was a pretty nice press, being a "one-off" project press.

As far as Mechanical advantage with the gears goes, it really doesn't have anything over any other press. Now, a press that utilized a planetary gear set for instance, and a ratchet for a handle would give you a tremendous advantage. Connect the sun gear to the ratchet, anchor the planet carrier to the press, and connect the internal ring gear to the ram. Know my planetary gear sets inside out. A person with some know how could make a press that would resize 5"-54 Naval cases. I have just enough machine shop education to make me dangerous but enough planetary gear info to be useful to someone wanting to make something like this.

Yeah, but the ~two foot long screw in primer can be a problem.......

Small gear driven arbor presses put out a lot of force.
But then so do levers that cam over at the right time.
It should be an interesting press to experiment with.
Super score!

What would you like a picture of? Let me know & I will give you a picture (s) of that part(s). These days, pictures are no problems.

With a change of shell holders, you should be able to load any caliber you can find dies for. The priming arm looks like a Herter's from what I can see in the picture. I have one that was sold to me on one of the auction sites as a Hollywood priming arm, but it's for a Herter's press instead.

Hope this helps.

I saw a picture of a Lee Auto Prime shellholder while doing my searches and Presto! Now, just have to buy a Lyman J-shellholder adaptor. There's one on Fleabay that I'm gonna buy right now.
