My buddy Gene made a trip to New Zealand this spring, and took a fine stag with his 10 bore Jaeger rifle. I've known Gene for over 25 years. I have shot, hunted, played music with, and attended his invitational shoots at his ranch. We worked together at Serengeti Rifles, and he is head gunsmith at Kilimanjaro Rifles now. He is probably the finest shot with anything I have ever seen, be it longbow, a Sharps rifle at 1000 yards, or on a combat pistol course. We are members of the same mountain man association, and he is the real deal.
Pay attention to his accouterments for hunting, and the amount of powder to use in the priming pan. He is one guy I know that his rifle will always go off when the chips are down. Like all refined and civilized men, he prefers flintlocks.

This runs just a bit more than 22 minutes. Enjoy!

Wonderful video, great hunt, beautiful area. When compared to some of the hunts on the hunting channels this one is far better. Gene is a great hunter and an all around great person from what I can see. I can see why anyone would want to call him a buddy. Thanks for sharing.

I've shot buffalo a couple times with Gene. He would shoot running buffalo with a .62 flintlock, dumping them in their tracks. He knows how to place a boolit!

Beautiful, the gun, the hunt, and the country. Color me jealous!

Talking to another friend at the gun show this morning, I was told after the drying period, this stag is now ranked #1 in the world.

That's my 'back yard'. Great to see Gene enjoying it.

I was confused at first, when neither of them were wearing purple long johns!

I suspect Gene had his underneath. Customs issue them on entry to the country you know.

I have to say that shot on the walking billy was way cool. 120m offhand with a 10 bore. Most hunters couldn't have done that with a scoped, high power rifle I fear.

Jeff, that old Marine is one remarkable shot. He is like a portable bench rest. I've beat him in competition a few times over the years, but it is rare when it happens. As I said before, he is probably the best shot I have ever seen. The shot on the stag was also off hand.

Ric, That was one of best videos I've seen. It made my heart leap for joy when he said "Thank You Jesus"!! Do you happen to know what the barrel length is on that flintlock? Thanks very much for sharing.

I don't know the barrel length right off hand. I would make a guess of around 38".
Gene is a lay preacher, and a strong Christian, very active in his church.

I would like to shake his hand someday, that was an amazing video! "The Lord is a good God!" Everything about him shows a humble and efficent man, and a top shot. Excelent work on the billy, i wish we could have seen the shot on the stag but he made another fine shot there.
It would be impossible to even begin to do that story credit had it not been filmed, truely amazing! Thank you for sharing with us your friend's hunt.

Well, Gene is a heck of a good story teller, and his description of the hunt would have you rolling on the floor, begging for mercy!

Speaking of him being a top shot, we have tried to talk him into auditioning for the show, "Top Shot". He just laughs, and says he is too busy. He would definitely be a guy to put your money on!

Thanks for sharing this video link. Was surprised to see how little powder he put in the pan. Looked like it barely covered the bottom. My questions is why are the pans so big when you don't need all that space for powder?

Good question. I think it may have to do with the geometry of the lock, and using the available area.
