Went to check the oil in the car this morning. Popped the hood and a woodchuck was there to greet me! Startled me and he was doing flips trying to squeeze down between the motor and transmission. He ran down the driveway all annoyed. I've got a .22 short for him, but will go with a live trap instead. :groner:

Have never had a ground-hog but have had squirrels get under the hood and chew up the wires.

If a groundhog can do as much damage to an engine as they can do under a house, I'd opt for the 22 instead.
Just sayin'.

I'd opt for the 22 instead.

I'd opt for the .22 also, but discharging a firearm in a residential neighborhood might cost more than a trap..........

Remember they are tasty critters, clean ans salt and cook on a rack in a slow oven, or a dutch oven. I have a recepie at home if you are interested.

A trick that works for pack rats that may work for ground hogs, is to keep the hood open on the vehicles. Take away the dark place, they stay out usually.

As for bait for the trap cantalope rind works good and I have had luck with cut up apple for groundhogs. I trap them then off them with a .22 short because in this state you either have to release them on the same property they were traped on, dosn't do much good, or eliminate them. If you can't shoot them they have trouble swimming for long inside the trap or cover the trap and connect it to an exhaust pipe and they will sleep but won't wake up.

The exhaust pipe trick really does work, and it's relatively humane too. Probably more so than drowning them.

Wilco,
Get the biggest trap they have!
I have a possum problem and they will not go into a small trap.
Bought the biggest I could find and have caught 7 in a redential neighborhood.
Neighbor has dogs and feeds them outdoors, that draws the critters in and then they check out my yard for desert. can wreck a peach or apple tree in one night.
a 22 cal BB from a pump up gun in the scull works wonders.

Wilco, Get the biggest trap they have!

I did! Went to Tractor Supply and bought their combo trap for $35.00.
Looks like it'll do the job. Also bought a nice cantaloupe. :p
Thanks for all the helpful tips guys.
