I am looking for a different ogive for my 80-90 grain 223 Rebated boat tail HP's. I am currently using the 6S, and I am thinking about going to the 9S. My rounds are shotgunning now at a hundred yards with the 6S ogive, and I think it is because I have to fit the bullet so far into the case in order to get the round to chamber. Any thoughts? What are you guys recommending.

I have 8s and 10s if I were going for that heavy a bullet I would use my 10s. but your may want to consider a vld design. maybe even 12 -14s

I dont think the bullet profile is causing the problem. Sierra has a 77 gr bullet that is loaded to mag length. I don't know the profile but it looks just like a 69 gr when loaded. These shoot great and are widely used in fast twist rifles.

The 80 gr Sierras are loaded long and don't fit a magazine. They are used single loaded so it's not a problem.

What twist is your barrel? I think you will need a 1-7 or more to stabilize those bullets.

I'm using the in a 6.5/1 gain twist AR loaded one at a time. That 6S ogive seats pretty far back to get it to chamber. I haven't had issues with Berger bullets, but they have a longer ogive, allowing me to seat the bullet longer.

Well it would certainly seem to reason that the 6.5 twist should stabilize the bullet.

Of course there are a lot of factors.........

What are you using for jackets? J4 I imagine?

What sort of load development?

I have had bullets I made that didn't look to shoot well untill I found the magic load. example, my 30 cal bullets from 5.7 brass, 73 grains was the sweet spot. Plus or minus 2 grains of powder added 2 additional inches to the group.

Hopefully it is only a matter of a bit more load development.

I'm using J4 jackets. My groups are 6 inches plus, and with this rifle, a half inch group at a hundred is a bad day. I have been using Sierra and Berger bullets till now, and I'd like to think my bullets are better quality.

Did you shot some of your proven loads the same day you shot the 6" groups? Or have you shot your proven loads since? Just want to rule out any scope/mount or gun issues. Then we can talk about bullet construction I guess?

The same chamber that works for 69's, 77's, ain't necessarily gonna be good for them 80's. Sounds like you're seating short and may just need some more throat. 80's run fine in my 1:7, but they're looong ! 2.458" OAL in my current barrel.
