went to an estate sale and a gun marked unkown military caught my eye. It was ugly as sin with a barrel that turned freely and nobody wanted it, so I got it. At home I determined it was a carcano(gulp) and the barrel chamber was really short so I tried a 7.62x39 in and it fit perfect. Now I started getting excited because I always thought this cartridge would be cast friendly in a bolt rifle. I had a light weight hunk of cherry that would be perfect for a mannlicher stock but not deep enough for proper comb heighth so I figure what the heck lets go for it. Tightened up the barrel, made the ramp for sight and scope, install front sight ramp, another bolt handle, reblue and put it all back together. With scope it is lighter than a win 94. Rem ammo is scatter gun groubs, so I reloaded some 303 jacket bullets and they were still unacceptical accuracy. I made a chamber cast and beagled a lee 303 mold till boolit fit and a rd 30-165 boolit also. With 335, 4895 and blc-2 around 19 grains is very accurate at 70 yards. The lee boolit came out at 195 grains and is constantly putting the first 2 shots in a biggish hole but it always throws the third out a inch or so. Well I have alot more respect for the carcano actions, very well built, the bolt handle I could not weld with the torch so we mig welded it, very simple trigger, I am playing around making a safety for the trigger so I can leave the bolt safety on always, I also have a plan to make it feed with out the charger then I can move the scope back over the action. I would never have done this for myself, but i finished somebody elses dream and I kinda like the way it turned out.
