Just picked up an 1889 Spandau and finished cleaning her up today, got all the rust and crud out,

Cleaned up all the surface rust staining on action and polished in all the corners to remove crud/rust buildup.

It has 114.R.6.110. regiment stamped on left side of receiver.

Has N.M under G. Mod.88.

Above the Crown stamp on receiver is .a dot, Z S

Under right front receiver is Script letter N then W U K dot with a Z and o? Then a 1MUVD

Barrel is marked 71 matching serial # 1571 on receiver? And four script cartouches and letters F C , Opposite side of barrel marked N.M. B.B.7 Rear sight marked 7,80

Front band has X’ed out 114. R.E.3.186.
Rear band has 10. J.s.i?

Has unusual magazine cap with spring and round plug to pop clip back up to/out of receiver.
Cleaning rod has mark between two slots that looks like a "078 or RLo"

Came with Muzzle cap marked Crown over B. and old sling and cleaning rod hook loop but is cracked and missing end loop with stud.

All matching parts except bolt matches itself #35, Muzzle slugs .3246”, Throat is worn so should be nice cast bullet gun.
Butt plate marked: Go? EBZX, 4H , crown/script/mark.

Thinking of selling it as I already have another one to shoot.

You have a nice gew88 for collector purposes. The muzz covers for these tend to be $150 ish range. If sling is period original that's a plus. Not sure of your description but I assume the bolt is a mismatch to the rifle ?.

Nice! How many clips did you get with it?

Stripper clip mod on front of rear receiver bridge? I think that with sping steel plate over bottom is 1904 MOD. The 1914 mod added the grind into rear of front bridge for the then new longer spitzer bullet. Nice looking ol' girl. Gtek

The gew88's on hand were not modified for S patronen until beginning 1905 - hence the 88/05 "designation". Being the gew98 was issued with the S patronen starting in 1903 the germans pinched pennies to make the 88's on hand compliant later.
The sheet metal cover with spring loaded disc was a wartime mod to not only keep out mud but allow the ejection of th emannlicher clip - these are not found on the mauser type charger guide modified gew88's.
A little tidbit as to why the receiver was notched for the mauser charger when modified was not that the S patronen bullet was longer - because it was'nt. Simply th emagazine modification would allow the mauser charger with 5 cartridges to pitch forward and in charging could be popped out of the mauser charger and or cause a jam without that clearance cut. Plus if the gew88 so modified was used with 88 patronen in mauser chargers it would be assured to clear the receiver when loading. The germans had alot of 88 patronen on hand and tried to use as much of it as they could with units equipped with the 88 rifles and maxim guns.

Joe,

What do you value it at minus the cap? Sorry, no Martini's, I was into semi-autos for so long I passed up tons of cheap awesome rifles in the early to late 80's and sorely regret it now :(

If I parted it ou,t value for just the very good to excellent condition parts would total maybe $425, maybe $475 to a matching Regiment part collector which are far and few between.

Its all matching parts including stock, action, screws, bands, bbl jacket, BPLT.

How about an all matching Fin capture M38 Mosin? This is a vet bring back from WWII in good condition and shiny bore, not refiinished of course. I can supply detailed pics of the rifle assembled and taken down when I did a detailed cleaning showing all markings.

Okay, may be trading the M38 for another Garand now anyway, some day though I'll trade into a nice Gew 88 though, thanks for considering it.
