Why doesn't anyone make a slower twist rate for the blackout? They're all 7 or 8 twist. Thats just too fast for most of my boolits. Its also not very good for lighter jacketed bullets like 100-130g. Anyone know where to find a 9 or even a 10 twist AR barrel without having to have one custom made?

My guess for what it is worth, as the 300 BLK becomes more popular, other twist rates will be available.
Have you priced brass lately?? My take is that will come down as well.

The cartridge is one in a line up with the .300/.221, .300 Whisper and several other variations of this theme. The fast twist is for heavy bullets at subsonic velocities, using a suppressor, very quiet. My AR has an 1 in 8 twist, but handles light bullets very well. My Savage is 1 in 10 and handles lighter bullets at super sonic velocities well, but not the heavies (above 200 grains).

There's a a company call black hole weaponry that makes one in 1:11 but it's a polygonal rifling style ? Besides them I don't think there's alot of options . I looked also but went the custom route for my 12 twist it wasn't that long a wait and the price was about the same as a production barrel

Who did you have build it?

Who did you have build it?Ron Williams http://www.rmwxtreme.com/ He'll make it exactly how you want it. I cant say enough about the job he did on the barrel he did for me ,Really top notch job and as I said priced very well.

Even with a 8 twist in my 300 Whisper it doesn't stabilize the new Lee 235gr boolit. But it does work very well with boolits from 113gr to 206grs.
I use the 125gr Nosler BT for some of my hunting and it is very accurate.

Odd, my 1-8" 300 blackout stabalizes the 235gr Lee and 245gr Accurate molds boolits perfectly at subsonic speeds. What load are you using?

I wanted to see what a 10 twist Blackout would do so I took an old take off Win 70 barrel in 30-06 and carved it into a AR barrel. It shoots light bullets great but the interesting thing is results with the Lee 230 TL. Even though every shot hole at 100 yards shows evidence of tipping the groups are small and I don't have any trouble ringing a 300 yard gong as long as the wind's not too stiff.

Interesting little experiment.

Forgetting the subsinic suppressed issue I think it would be a great AR cartridge with 18" twist for use with 100 - 125 gr j and cast at 2000 - 2400 fps. The fast twists available won't do with cast at those velocities.

Larry Gibson Mr Gibson, Would a twist that slow( 1:18) still work for midweight bullets like the Lee 155 or 150 fn ? Again at normal speed not subsonic, When I was deciding about my barrel I though about going slower than the 12 twist I got but just didnt know for sure how heavy I could shoot at those reduced speeds and still be stable ,I do know my 12 twist shoots the 311299 just fine from 1200-1600 fps .If I get another one I might go even slower .

I have no need for that as I have other rifles that fit better into that niche. I built my 300BLK to shoot heavy cast boolits at low velocity, not necessarily subsonic.

If anyone is wanting a slow twist barrel for the Savage bolt actions check the following www.barrelman.com. As I read it the prefit Savage Shilen barrels can be had in 1 in 15 twist in 30/221 (aka 300BLK) for a decent price.

Larry,

looks good in print here, but a slow twist limits you to a very short list of cast or jacketed bullets.
Might as well do what I did, spend the $350 for a PPSH-43C in 7,62x25 and reload with those same lightweight bullets you mentioned. Boxer primed brass is available, and they are a lot of fun.
