Recovered a boolit from the lawn today and the gas check looks like the copper color was "washed" off most of the base and the sides from the rifling. Are they made of a copper plated material of some kind?

I sent an inquiry to Hornady so we'll see what they say.

Huh? -that would be interesting ...

Maybe lead wash?

Are they new?

I know it sounds funny but it sure looks like in this picture of my recovered boolit that it's a plating. Lead wash was the first thing I thought too but it doesn't look like it but then again I could be wrong.

Maybe it's time to give the barrel a good scrubbing and make sure it's not leaded. It doesn't look like it but you never know.

It is picking up lead as it goes down the tube. How is your bullet fit? I wonder if your bullet is a bit small.

Hornady is using gilding metal for checks. No different froma bullet jacket, something they know a bit about.

Yup, lead wash.

Agree with above posts, that's lead soldered to the gilding metal.

Ok, just never saw that before. It was probably from some previous test rounds that I tried sized at .309 as these sized at .310 don't lead a bit.

Thanks

Hit it with a fine file and see what's under the lead on the gas check. That should tell you for sure.

Hope this helps.
