I had it trimmed down, sandblast the "Target Gray" off, and had the cylinder polished. I also have a set of Grasshorn Elk Stag inserts to go into the handle when it gets back!

I want to do the same with my 454 SRH. Is that about 4.75" barrel length or so?

Did you reattach the front sight yourself? The prospect of figuring that part out is my stumbling block right now.

LOL, I was in the same position you were a few months ago when I saw one Sturmcrow!

I sent it off to http://www.dixiefirearms.net/ to have the barrel cut to around 4.75-5in. I sent him the picture that I found off of Magnaports websight and my only instructions were that I just wanted enough barrel to reinstall my front sight. Rod said not a problem! Ps, the one off Magnaports sight is 4.80 FWIW.

The only thing I will be doing is putting the grips on when it gets back… Muwahahahaha!

very nice I can't wait for a range report. Just curious about the barrel length you chose were you going for a easy to carry or was it a just a because that's what you wanted. I just picked up super redhawk in .480 today and I would like it to be 5.5 but chances are it will stay untouched and I like the target gray.
what I the loads you have loaded up? I need to get a mold and a sizer but I did get 50factory loads so that might get me by till the mold gets here

As my user name would indicate I love my TC’s. I counted them up the other day and I have 20 barrels. 10 for the Contender and 10 for the Encore… LOL

Now, I love my Ruger revolvers. I have 2 SBH’s in 44 Mag, a 7 ½ in and a 4 5/8 in. I also have 2 SRH’s, 1 in 44mag with a 9.5 in that wears a 2-6 Bushnell 3200 and shoots 2in groups at 100 yards with handloads and the 480 pictured above.

I find myself constantly hunting with my TC and wearing one of my iron sighed 44 Mag revolvers on my belt. I actually worked up loads with my 480 at 100 yards with a 2-7 Burris. But I never used it. I thought about selling it and decided I would regret it one day. After talking to Whitworth, I decided to cut it down and keep it. I will use it more for my needs the way it is now and I already see it being a constant companion.

As for loads, I have a Lee 325gr mold I am working with. Before my barrel was cut I played with H110, 4227, 2400, AA#9, and Blue Dot with the Lee 325 on the second crimp line. I found I could easily get 1400 fps with the powders listed above.

It will be interesting to see what my vel is with a 4.75 barrel… LOL

I wish my dad had cut his 480 SRH to that length rather than having it cut to Alaskan length. Hell for that matter, I wish I hadn't traded it to him!! :)

The SRH I had with the 5-inch barrel was perfect. Easy to carry, accurate. 5-inches or thereabouts is a good length for these revolvers.

That SRH you had is very cool isn't that the one you sold to Lee?

I'm pretty stoked about getting the .480 I didn't think I'd ever be able to own one or shoot one and I licked out. I was fortunate enough to find someone who let me shoot it even gave me a sack of ammo and told me to have fun and then a week later was able to find one locally that I was able to make a deal on.

When I bought mine 3 years ago I paid 550.00 for it shipped to my FFL and paid 10.00 for my FFL. I don’t think I could ever replace it for that price again!

When I originally put this one up for sale I started looking at single actions in 480/475 with 5-6in barrels. I knew then I needed to keep this one and cut it down. I did the math on this one and it will weight within a few oz off my 4 5/8ths SBH in 44 Mag. That is the reason I cut it down. It will be a “poor mans custom 480…” LOL

white eagle here on the forum has had his cut to 5.5 inches and it looks very well balanced and I think it looks pretty good at that length and I am one of the odd balls that like the target gray I just wish it was a bit durable

I just wish it was a bit durable
That is the reason right there I had mine taken off.

I wonder if you could get a "hard chrome" in a gray?

Just thinking out loud...

That little Vaquero is shocking light compared to your SRH, and I am afraid it would beat on you a bit. I couldn't in good conscious allow that to happen :bigsmyl2:

P.S. It really does when you load it like a 5 shot. Fill the case with H110 and seat as far out as possible.

I'm glad I finally got my .480 SRH back in December. Factory 9 1/2" barrel and brushed stainless finish. It looks just like my .44mag SRH other than the cylinder. I doubt I'll be chopping the barrel though, I'm happy with the way it is....

TC here is what mine is like
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v730/kempobb/a2a.jpg,
I left the target grey on for the time being but that may change later
haven't noticed any loss in accuracy and it sure move's things when I hit them at the range

I just can't get over the target gray... LOL

I have really enjoyed this one and figured that sense the other was getting trimmed already, why not go ahead and have fun with it...

SRH in 44mag with a 9.5in barrel.
load was a 240gr K over 2400...
Shot was at 50 yards
Scope is a 2-6 Bushnell
The Grashorn Elk Stag grips are going to be thieved from this one and placed on my 480 when it gets home...

I have the same .44 mag minus the stag grips. Nice shot! Mine really shoots the H&G #503 MiHa clone, 260gr Keith over 23.5gr H110. I never was able to get my .44 SRH to group with 2400 to well.
