Hi all;
Has anyone worked up loads using only one powder for both a 45 Colt (Marlin) and a 30-30 (Model 94 Win.)?:?:

I would suggest Lyman's cast bullet manual for the loads and personally I would use Unique powder.

Try 2400, Accurate 5744 or #9, 4227 for rifle loadings. Do a search here for gmdr for a jillion cast boolit loads in various calibers.

I use both VV10B101 and Trail Boss in those two calibers. Not ideal for either but both are very accurate and work fine for levergun silhouette shooting with mild loads.

Depending on desired velocity, I would say Unique or 2400 also. I use both, but burn a lot more Unique than 2400 since my plinking loads only have to be strong enough to punch through paper. For hunting loads, I quit playing with pistol powders for the .30-30 and go with 3031 instead. The .45 Colt works well for hunting loads with either Unique or 2400 though.

bullseye through aa-2230 will work.
i have used h-4895 in the 45 colt before.

yes, and my wife can wear my shoes, but it works out better if we each have our own.

By the same token, getting only one powder for two dissimilar guns is false economy. While you can find something that semi-suits both, in fact it won't be right for one of them, and perhaps not for either of them. The powders that work best in the 45 LC won't be the best for the 30-30, and the obverse is true as well. I like Unique, Red Dot, and Blue Dot in my 45 LC, 2400 and ww 748 in my 30-30's. I could use only 2400, but I'd be shortchanging the 30-30, velocity wise, and running the 45 hotter than I'd like most of the time.

Thisis, as others have said, a case where can and should may be different.

What velocity range are you loooking at for each cartridge? If you ant 30-30 loads in the 1600 fps range and 45 Colt loads around 1200-1400 fps, depending on bullet weights of course, then 2400 will certainly work.

I use lots of 2400 in 30-30, not much in 45 Colt. I am far more likely to use AA5 or Unique in 45 Colt.

They other members said it. All depends on what you are trying to do. Unique will shoot roundballs out of both well. I use the same amount of unique for the gas checked lee soupcan in the .30-30 as I do with a 255 rf in the .45. However I find slower powders more suitable for "rifle loads" in the .30-30.
