With Marlin being of questionable quality lately....has anyone bought, and/or shot a Henry or Rossi rifle in 30-30 or 45-70? Are they any good?

Marlins seem to have gotten better. Don't have a Henry, but like my Rossi. It is a good gun after you finish fitting the parts.

My only Rossi's are 2 .357s and a .45, and all three shoot great. If the .30-30 and .45-70 are built the same way, you will like them. The Henry is a .22, but shoots at least as well as the Rossi's. I have handled, but not shot the full grown Henry, and it just seemed somewhat heavy, like the type of gun that would not swing very well, but would just stay on target almost by itself.

Lonegun how do your 357 rifles shoot? I have always heard they are not as accurate as a 44 or 45.

Thanks

I've been looking at them but I can't make up my mind either. I really like the looks of the Henry but I'd like to see one of the new Marlins.

I've examined the Henry .30 -30 and its really nice, fully the equal of the Marlin 336C. If it performs as well as their .22's then it should be a winner, I have their H001T .22 LR with octagonal barrel and LOVE IT. I was plotting to get the Henry .30-30 before I lucked into the Mossberg 464 for $230.00.

My sole Rossi is an ancient Puma. Works good. The Henrys I have handled in centerfire are enormously heavy IMO. To each their own, they should soak up the recoil well.

Why not search the used market for something you really want?

I would still get a Marlin today. Much hype, so little real evidence. Internet rumor doesn't frighten me a bit.

I would not buy a marlin, I bought one 12 months ago new in a 44 mag., it would not even chamber a round from the get go. I paid 600.00 for the piece of ****. I have since bought 2 Rossi in 45 colt and 44 mag. and they worked right out of the box, look good and are lower in price. The Rossi is a better fit for me also, lighter and just fits me better when I shoot it.

The one of the two I have that I get to play with will do 1.5-3" at 100 yds depending on what kind of day I'm having--usually 1.5-2.25". The other one I bought fo my girlfriend after she threatened to steal mine, and I have only had a chance to shoot it at 50yds, but the group was just a hair under 1.25". To be fair, mine is with loads I worked up for it, while hers was with some .38 Spl loads cause she basically wants that rifle to handle like a .22 that makes a slightly bigger hole in the paper and doesn't want any recoil. My .45 Colt doesn't do quite as well as the .357, usually 2.5-4" at 100yds, but I haven't had it as long and haven't spent the time for load work-up like I did with my .357 yet.
