I shot a bunch of BH 209 in my 45/90 but after finishing the last of what I had on hand I switched to Varget, BH 209 is a good powder but it just costs waaaaay to much for those big cases. Varget has been a good choice for me because it fills the case nicely and yields low pressures, about the same as the BH 209 in my loading.

Always good to see another 45/90 shooter, what rifle are you shooting and what bullet?

I'm shooting a Paul Jones Money Bullet and a Steve Brooks Pseudo Money Bullet with 90 gr of Swiss 1.5 in a Newer Winchester 1885 BPCR. Just wondering how they compare load wise for filling the capacity and velocity. Watched a lot of people shoot it in 45-70's this weekend, but haven't seen anyone use it in a 45-90.

Actually my favorite load is 85 grain of FFG but I do shoot the Varget a lot also.

I have used blackhorn 209 in 45-70 and 45-90 but only with 350 gr bullets. I followed their chart and instructions as best as I could and found it to be a good powder and quite satisfactory. It is certainly not blackpowder but as good or better than some alternatives. My shooting was confined to 100 yds or less. Also tried it in 38-55, 45colt and schofield. The part I really like is the easy cleanup especially in the revolvers.

Other than the brass, I don't find the cleanup of the gun as easy as Black Powder.

What were you using as a filler?

Uhhh no filler. Used only one piece waxed card stock. So far it doesn't seem to require additional lube in the case.I can't disagree with the clean up aspect with plenty of lube for the blackpowder but it depends which firearms I use. Some are certainly easier to clean than others.

So you are saying you leave the powder loose with a gap in the shell?

Also, do you find any drop in elevation after a couple shots?
I put the first two in the same hole yesterday and the next three dropped an inch low at 100 yds.

Much as I Prefer Black, There are some situations where I won't shoot it any more.
I'll just leave it at that.

I am certain I probably don't have your experience based on your postings but as I recall the 45-90 Blackhorn loading info says no compression. I have only tried it a couple of times in the 45-90. IN an "85 with Sage bullets at 500+grns and in an '86 with 350Grns. I cannot say I like it better than Goex blackpowder but I definitely like it better than 777 and Pyrodex. It works A-oK for me with the minimal wad powder. If not enough than I add a piece of candel wax.

As I am curious Mr Semtav what area of Montana are you? I plan to meet with my son in Great Falls in August (stationed in the USAF) and am just asking.
