View Full Version : Has anyone used "The Load" in 308win with a cast boolit?

I have been doing some reading here and other places about using a reduced load in rifle calibers using 13gr of Red Dot Powder. Has anyone tried this? What would be a good bullet weight for 100 to 200 yard target shooting? Any thoughts on a good alloy mix? I have linotype, pure lead, and pewter on hand. I believe this round travels at 1600 fps. This would be shot out of a Rem 700 SPS tactical with a 20in barrel. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, guys.

Never have shot "the load" in any gun.

In a 308 it is hard to go wrong with a 165 to 180 gr cast bullet.

Ok thanks! Any thoughts on alloy?

Wow, that is a tough call. I would suggest a gas check with that load. I would go with something approximating wheel weights or maybe 75/25 WW to lead and water dropped. Then again, that is about what I use for almost all rifle loads.

I dont tend to use really hard alloys for anything. Others do. Alloy suitability is somewhat of a hot topic around these parts. Some to soft in oat cases, others like hard bullets. It all comes down to experience and what works for a guy.

With a check, good fit, and a good lube you shouldn't have too much trouble getting reasonable accuracy. I don't think "the load" is purported to be super accurate in any gun but it will work and be reasonably accurate.

Hang around here long enough and you will soon learn that very few things are universally agreed upon. Once we get past " pull the trigger to make it to bang" it breaks into "camps" of people who hold certain beliefs.

I hope that gives you a reasonably acceptable answer. This is an area where you will WR more answers than a 14 year old has pimples!

I have used 13 gr of red dot in 308 with 150 and 170 gr boolits, it will work OK for 50-100 yds. My best light load accuracy in 308 however has been with 2400(18) and XMP5744(20) SR4759 has also given very good accuracy in my 308 light loads. 200 yards is stretching it with "the load". For heavy rifle loads I like to use 1 lino to one lead "hardball" for target shooting, or a water dropped mix such as 1/2 or even 1/3 for hunting. All of my 308 rifle loads are gas checked and sized at .310 or .311 . Hope this helps...

3 parts lead to one part lino will give you a good alloy.
the red dot load produces 40k pressure but doesn't give the velocity other 40k loads will.
it's about the gas volume.
nothing wrong with the load if you have the powder on hand.
i have red dot on hand but have better uses for it.

I shoot it quite a bit in a rebarreled Mauser with boolets from 150 to 200 grains. Accuracy varies a bit depending on the boolet/loob combination, but when I feed it one it likes then it's a good performer.

I've used THE load in the .308 Win. The only .30-cal bullet I cast is the Lee 170 F. I run it through a Lee .309" sizer to seat the gas check and use before and after coats of LLA.

It shoots beautifully, does not lead the bore and hits the predicted 1600 fps spot on. If you have some, Green Dot works just as well, BTW.

I've never shot the red dot load. I have however shot lots of Ed Harris's original ( the load ) of 16 grs of 2400 out of every gun I own with excellent results. I don't own a 308 though.
Out of my 30-30 17 grs gets me 1700 fps, same for my 8mm Mauser , in my 06 it takes 21 gr to get to the same velocity. I shoot a pretty soft alloy and all my guns have 10" twists and this is about as fast as I can go with excellent accuracy.

Yep, have shot it in a couple of 308's with a number of blts both plain base and
gc. Good plinkers for sure with most blts, some more accurate than others, but good enough in most cases for offhand 50 yd practice.
