I just traded a small chicken coop and 5 chickens for a Rugar 10/22 with two 10 round clips. It doesn't have a rear sight, but it shoots good. At least the action works good, until I get a sight I won't know how straight it shoots.

This trade was kind of a fluke. My son broke up with his girlfriend and she left the chickens and the coop he built (I guess you could say he got custody of the chickens). He didn't want them so he posted them on Craigs list and some guy offered the gun for the chickens.

anytime you can get rid of chickens is a good trade IMO

I love this. What could be more American than posting chickens for sale and getting a gun in trade?

Sounds like a good trade, unless you're hungry for chicken.

The rear sight should not be too hard to replace, they look like William's flip ups. There are many after market options available for the 10/22, including scope mountings. Wallmart carries weaver scope rings that mount directly to the receiver for about $12 last I looked (about a year ago.)

Have fun with your new summer project,

I bet my girlfriend wishes I would trade off some of my chickens for another 10/22.

for me to be careful when trading with those Texas cowboys.
I just might get some chickens and offer them on Craigs list.[smilie=w:

I would rather have my 10 22 than a couple of dozen chickens.

Then again, you can't eat the rifle.

How hard is it to raise guineas? I'm considering some for watch dog duty, and they are good eating, better than chicken in my opinion.

When I was a kid, we had Guinneas, they acted more like a wild bird than a domestic fowl. They roosted in the barn (messy) at night and at dawn they left the roost and did a complete circuit of the farm, returned at night and the process began all over again. They aren't like chickens, very poor parents. the mortality rate is close to 100% percent they don't keep a very good eye on the little ones. As far as watch dogs, you won't do a lot better. Our road only had a car or two on it per day and our closest neighbor lived a quarter mile away but we knew exactly what time Bob got home. They are excellent eating, impossible to catch. We generally used a .22 with a head shot. The darn things drove me crazy, but I miss having them around.

I was gonna chime in.... but I can't add a word to what Jeff Michel said. That was a perfect summary of guineas.

Last year I had a surplus of cantaloupes in the garden, so I picked them and went about distributing them to all my elderly neighbors. One gentleman, who owns a remodeling company, told me to wait for just a second, because he had something for me.

He pulls out an old, rusty single shot 12ga, with the stock broken and held together with baling wire and duct tape, and gives it to me. His crew found it in a house and the new owners couldn't get rid of it fast enough (city folks...). Surprisingly, the bore and chamber were clean. After a couple of brave (foolish?) test firings, I listed it online, along with the story and it was sold for $60 in less than a day. The new owner is restoring it and keeping me updated with the progress.

That is just another reason i like the barter system
