I am going to order a 454 Puma in a couple of weeks, I was looking at Lee's Modern Reloading ans see that the 454 takes a .452 bullet and the 45 colt a .454. I have a 45 Colt and have been loading .452 J bullets with no problems and .454 CB's so can I use the CB's I have been loading for the 45 Colt or do I need to get more molds?
Can I shoot 45 Colt in the 454 Puma?
Thanks for your replys

ignore that and let your barrel tell you. Jacketed 45's are 98% .452 btw. its the old saa's with oversize everything that determined the "need" for .454 in their heads.
We CB folks slug the barrels and let the guns tell us. chances are something you have will do just fine.

I figured that and I will probley not shoot anything but CB's in it. Haven't shot anything but CB's for quite a while.

My 454 Puma shoots fine with .452" boolits. I don't and won't shoot the shorter .45 Colt ammo in mine, I just use .454 Casull brass and reduce the load.

The cost of the brass is lower from Midway (454 is on sale) they have MagTech brass on sale for $21.89 per 100 45 colt brass is higher. Now another question I have as et of 45 Colt loading dies can I use them for the 454?
I am going to get all the stuff to reload before I get the rifle so there will be no delay in me getting to shoot it.
I work part time (I am retired) for a FFL dealer and JSC has the 454 Puma for $354 + shipping and I have to pay the sales tax so I will still come under $400.

45colt dies have worked for me and my SRH's for a few years now. Magtech was the first ammo I bought way back, Nachez had a sale on some and I bought 5 20rd boxes, that brass is still going strong. That should be a fun rifle.

The only caveat about using .45 Colt dies to load .454 Casull is the crimping. In a rifle, it's not much of an issue, but put the same ammo in a revolver and it could start pulling boolits. I know you're going to use this in the Puma, but if for some reason you use any in a revolver, check to be sure the boolits stay where they were crimped. Here is a good excuse to buy the Lee Factory Crimp Die!

Most of the recent Puma's I have seeen need some tweaking to shoot 45 Colt in the 454 chamber. I can't say I am real fond of the gun in 454 as if I want to shoot 45-70 loads I want a 45-70 rifle to go wiht it. I can't really enjoy shooting 45-70 loads in a 6 pound gun and for me at least the 45 colt seems to get the job done.

Yeah but you get to put twice as many .454's than 45/70's in the tube:drinks:

Yeah, but if you put the first one where it needs to go, you don't need twice as many. ;)

A good arguement for single shots!

That .454 with a 400 grain cast bullet and some lil' gun and you really don't need the rest of the magazine. seems like LSI/Puma used very good metal and machining. I've been shooting mine for a couple of years with some pretty heavy loads and a whole lot of medium ones and I can see no wear.
