What is your experience with MEC presses? My friend has a MEC that he bought about 18-20 years ago and said that he would give it to me for free. The press has seen minimal use, but I am still curious about the availability of parts for their older presses? How is there customer service? It looks like I will need to buy some shotgun components!

If you don't want it, send it to me. I will pay the shipping. I have been using my MEC 600 JR IV for over 20 years. I might need a replacement some day.

If he had used it on a regular basis it would probably just now be broken in, but since it's "seen minimal use" the breaking in will be left up to you. The older presses were better than the newer ones as the newer presses have plastic crimp starters and crimpers on them as well as plastic wad guides. I wouldn't worry too much about parts either since most (if not all) of them are interchangeable as far as i know depending on the model.

1st rule of business: "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth!"

2nd rule of business. "Procurement is more important than dispersal"

In your case apply rule #1

MEC sells more shotshell loaders than everyone else combined, and for good reason.

I passed my nearly 40 year old Versamec 700 on to my youngest son, kept the 9000. Wouldn't trade a Mec - unless some fool wanted to trade me a Ponsness Warren even.

Some of the older presses are harder to get presses for. Good news is if its newer than 40 years old there's good chance it can be retrofitted with newer parts. For example the crimp starter of old..metal houseing with brass insert can be easily updated with the new plastic design. Which I find works much better...along with the wad quire assembly.....the plastic they use is very tough.
