What is your favorite powder load in the 223 for AR loads with 55 gr bullets. What other uses does the powder have? Does it meter well in a powder measure (for use on a progressive press)?

25 grains of H335 in MY ROCK RIVERS. I bought WC844 at High Tech Ammo for about $80 per eight pounder...same data as H335...and will go with it when I use up the H335. I use 28 grains of H335 with NOE 311299 in my M1A...no leading; gun functions in semi auto; good off hand accuracy (for me.)

I bought the .223 conversion unit for my DILLON 550B...had to switch to the rifle powder bar...and loaded a bunch. I'm just too d*** cheap to enjoy blasting with the AR15 at two or three times the cost of everything else that I load for. Since I live in a low population "never never land" that is not suburban, but not rural either and just off the Inter-state highway, an AR with telescoping stock, short barrel and a red dot seems appropriate for investigating strange noises or suspicious activities. A 30 round magzine suggests that you aren't out rabbit hunting either.

Another vote for 25gr of H335, it's a ball powder and meters as good as any, better than most. With range pickup mixed headstamp brass and midsouth varmint grenade bulk bullets you should be able to group 5 shots into 1" at 100yds with that load. I also load 26gr of H-335 under 50 gr bullets in the .223.

So far I've only used H-335 for the .223, and have an 8# jug. My kids also shoot .223, so I don't have a problem with a dedicated .223 powder.

With 52 - 55 gr jacketed bullets I use 26.5 gr H335 in LC cases with a WSR primer. 26 gr of AA2230 works as well. I have pressure tested both and they duplicate U.S. M193 velocities and pressures.

Note loading manuals (current ones) show loads to SAAMI 223 Rem MAP standards. 5.56 NATO MAPs for ARs (as in this thread) are higher. Thus some of us who use "hotter" loads are using data developed and posted in earlier manuals. Both the loads I posted do not exceed 5.56 or 223 Rem SAAMI MAPs.

I use 16gr of H4895, functions our 16" 5.56 mid-length upper. I also use this powder in 300AAC, 6.8SPC, 8x57 and 30-06 with cast and condom loads. You can load it safely down to 60% of max.

Moonie, what are you using the h4895 for in 300 blackout? AR rifle? Subs, supers? I am looking at something to replace 1680. It has worked well, but is dirty. It just so happens that I have quite a bit of h4895 that I use for other guns.

I use 25.0 grains of H-4895 for everything up to 69 grain SMK's. According to Hodgdon's that's a full grain under max, but I didn't feel comfortable driving it any harder. Even with a 5.56 chamber, I was getting about 2750-2775 out of a 16" AR-15. I won't be buying any more of those bullets anyway.

With that said I was averaging between 2750-2850 with everything from 52 grains up to 69 grains through my AR. I don't like running stick powders through volume dispensers anyway, so I bought some CFE 223 for volume loading 223. But H-4895 meters fine through my electronic dispenser, and it's become my go to powder for everything, unless I need to run it through a volume type dispenser. Even the 7mm-08 and 7x57 mauser. I don't get top velocities, but it can really drive some tiny groups in my experience.

For my "cheap" .223 load it's either 50 gr dogtown HPs or 55gr sierra blitz. The 55 blitz I bought a bucket full of them years ago at a really good price. Both are driven with 26.2 grains of ww 748 and more accurate than I can hold offhand. The blitz tends to explode before they reach 100 yards out of a 1/7 twist bbl. The dogtown will hold together. If the twist is held to 1/9 or slower they both shoot very well.

If more accuracy is needed sierra 69 MK is used, but then again this isn't a cheap high volume load.

Subs, they seem to work well but when I was running them over the chrono I had large SD, I honestly don't know if it was due to loading technique or what at this point, low of 990fps high of 1100fps. I'm inclined to think it is a metering issue.
