I've noticed several folks with fast twist barrels shooting heavy bullets, mounted on TC hawken or similar stocks. Do you have problems with hammer lifting to the half cock notch?

Only if the load is too heavy and the nipple is worn out. My load is 80 gr of Pyrodex P with a 460 gr paper patched bullet. When my nipple is hosed the hammer lifts. If it is in good shape it stays down. When it lifts I replace the nipple. Ron

Yesterday I fired three shots from this one with a Lee 515-450-F with 80 grains FFg. No hammer lift. It has the original 1990's hotshot nipple in it.

However, as I noted on another forum, my glasses came off.

I had an original Brown bess that would knock my hat off every time I pulled the trigger.:guntootsmiley:

I'm shooting 80 grs. Scheutzen under a 450 gr. bullet in a Pedersoli double, 50 cal. New nipples and no lift. We'll see how it acts with a 500+ gr. bullet when I find one.

Thank you for the replies

The reason I ask this is I have a .40 1-16 barrel made up maybe 10 years ago to fit a Tc Hawken stock that I fired a few times with a 290 grain Rapine bullet and ,IIRC, about 40 grains of Pyrodex RS. It would lift the hammer to the half cock notch, something which did not happen when using my Green Mountain .50 1-28 barrel and maxi bullets.

I recently came across the .40 barrel in storage and was thinking about giving it a try again.

I have went to 90 grns of ffg Goex in my Green Mountion 45 1-20 and a 535 grain, after the fourth or fith shot it will lift the hammer with stainless steel nipples. The platium lined shows no wear but my shoulder informed me of the need to back off.

I now have a Gibbs and a Volenteer to play those games with now.

535! Oof!
I stick to the 457124 in my New Englander. It's plenty of lead, shoots straight and makes plenty of that "oof" on what it hits.

rmark,
I went the same route with a GPR. Ended up wishing I'd gone with about a 20" or so twist instead. How did the Rapine 290 work out?

'How did the Rapine 290 work out?'

I never shot it enough to really find out. The barrel is supposed to be .40 bore/.408 groove, the bullet as cast should be .403. But it fell by the wayside and ended up stored away until recently.
