I took my Smith to the range today to sight in the Aim Point 5000.
My loads were 5.3 grs. Unique with a Lyman 358156 solid sized .358"
with Hornady g/cs in 38 Spec cases with Win. small pistol primers.

YES ! !, I really like this revolver.

If I may ask, where did you get the mount from? A 686 is a wonderful revolver. Feels good, looks good and shoots like a dream.

Scoped 686 is a tack driver...

Nice gun...

Here's my 686-3:

Between the three models (29, 586, 686) S&W made somewhere under 5K with the milled doevetails on the barrels...They came factory with Millett rings/mounts, and a set of finger groove combat grips...All around 1989...

I hate the grips (still have them), so I made a set of fat Magna 'style' grips out of White Ash...Much better fit and feel to me...

Scope is a T/C lighted reticle 2.5x...

skipme56 :

My 686 is a " post 1992 " model , so the top strap is factory drilled & tapped for scope mounts.

The base and rings came from MidWay. Here are the specifics :

Weaver Top-Mount Scope Base #401S Silver

Leupold 30mm Rifleman Vertical Split Rings Weaver-Style Medium Silver.

I had the rear sight off and the base , rings, and scope on in about 15 minutes.

Thanks,

Ben

Salmoneye :

A VERY nice revolver you have there.
Yes, I bet it will drive nails.

I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this Ben, but since the cylinders aren't recessed, the barrel isn't pinned, there is a hole in the left hand side, and there isn't a firing pin on the hammer...that revolver isn't going to shoot very well for you. Oh, and the MIM trigger is going to break tomorrow, too! :bigsmyl2:

Here's my 686-5, which is EASILY my most accurate handgun with the best trigger. I've shot it so much that I've gone through 3 pounds of Bullseye using wadcutter loads in this gun alone!

My niece hitting whatever she points it at with 148gr HBWC over 700X.
I like guns, but I love my 686.

There are some guys on the internet that would make you think you need to. I put in the Wolff spring kit and followed the Jerry Miculek trigger job DVD to mine. I couldn't ask for a better shooting gun!

I've owned two of the 586/686-series revolvers, and I think very highly of the line. S&W addressed the too-short cylinder of the N-frame 357s and the too-weak platform issues of the K-frame 357s and REALLY got these revolvers right. They can routinely digest unlimited numbers of full-tilt 357 loadings without significant wear, and are not so heavy that having them in a hip holster all day poses a problem for the user. By current example, a 1990 686 x 4", is a constant outdoors companion and is listed on my CCW permit for authorized carry.

Wondering if i could get the cylinder length on you 686?
Thanks

Ben, that gun's no good--there's a hole in the barrel! Best thing to do is send it to me so you don't lose all your boolits, falling out the hole...

But all kidding aside, that is some sweet shooting. Those are darned good guns. They have gotten to be a bit pricey, but they are mighty fine shooting irons. The black gun crowd could take some pointers.

I don't know the cylinder length off the top of my head PacMan, but my 686 takes 357 brass loaded with Lyman 358429 crimped in the groove. I love it!

I VERY much agree with Al's post. I have a 586 +1 that is just a superb pistol in every way,
besides being a 7 shooter in the bargain!

I never could figure why folks want a scope on a pistol. Hell, Elmer was killing deer at 600 yards without one. I'd have them cross hairs bouncing all over creation at 50 or 100 yards.

My 686-1. I've not spent as much time with this one as I have with S&W in the past.

Our older eyes could be the reason.
What i really do not completly understand is why some buy a .357 mag without ever developing full house loads for it.
Wanta shoot a 38 buy a 38 wanta shoot a 357 buy a 357 and unleash it.
I see and have been guilty of bragging about group size with a .357 revolver only to revel/discover the groups were shot with mild/38 type loads. Heck most any revolver can do what i have done and most a lot better.
Put her to the test i say.

Because with a .357, we have the option...

I don't need a 180gr hard cast Penn TCBB with 13gr of H110 to take a head shot on a cottontail...

But it sure works well on deer...
