I loaded up some cast for my 308 last night the first time. I went to the range this AM to see how they shot. I kept getting one in a few groups that went about 2" low. I don't think it was me. I usually see when I pull a shot. Every one seemed to break clean. This happened on a couple of really good groups I had going.

One thing I noticed last night while loading in I had a few once fired cases in the mix. All the others were 3x fired. I noticed these because they had no inside chamfer. They were all FL sized as I like my brass be sized to just bump the shoulder. They all felt like they seated the same. But the 1x could have a differant neck tension than the others.

It also would be random. never knew when it would happen. Otherwise, they shot really good. Anyone have any other ideas. This is the first time loading for cast in a rifle caliber.

OK I just looked again at the targets. It happened when I was shooting ones loaded with new IMR4227 Is this powder position sensitive?

Here are the targets.

I just finished trying a new slightly hotter 45 acp load in my Contender and the boolits went all over the place (12") at 40 yards. I dropped the load back 100 fps and the group tightened right up again. You might try the same thing with your 308 except, since it is a rifle, tweak the mv up and down 150 fps and see what happens. Some weapons are that sensitive to velocity when using cast boolits.

I suspect that 4227 is at least slightly position sensitive. Is there any visible indication on the primers of lower pressure? It's not easy to see - I use a close up photo and view in full screen and measure with a ruler.

I was having that problem once with reformed military 308 into 243 cast loads.
For curiosity sake, I sorted all the flier cases in a different stack after being fired. After doing that, I could shoot 3/4"@100yds all day.
I've since annealed and turned the necks, but aint ran the test again.

Those are darn good groups with cast.
