I recently acquired an OP in very good condition. The serial number is 67XXXX, which from what I understand was manufactured in approx. 1942-43 (Sound right?). It has a six inch barrel and 95% of the original bluing. It was a police service weapon that looks like it never left the holster...but it was definately taken care of! Got it for $200.

Here's my big question: On the barrel it is stamped +HEAVY BARREL+ I know very little about this, but I read somewhere that the heavy barrel version was available via special order from Colt. Does it have any collector value?

I don't think Colt made a lot of those during the war, so I would suspect the date to be off a few years, but I'm certainly no colt expert!

In that condition you got a real good buy on the gun and I would guess that it would be worth more than the average gun due to both finish and the heavy barrel but I do know that a good 4 inch OP goes in the neighborhood of $350 to $400 around here.

Nice find! It's not widely known, but the OP series has Python lockwork.

Good shooting!

i have a 6" op made in the 50's it was a police gun. it belonged to the littlestown pa. police dept. it has target trigger and hammer. at the same time i aslo bought a 6" pps that had belonged to them also. they trafed both in on a shotgun.
