I recently picked up a Puma 92 clone to replace one I had traded off and because I could get it cheap I ended up with a JW special in 45 Colt. Now I am not a particular fan of the large loop and I was worried about the short barrel, but I think JW might have had something. For some reason I can see the sights clearer on the short barrel. After sight in I took that little gun out and shot 2" groups offhand from 50 yards, not just once, but 3 out of four. At 100 long paces from a rest the gun will go under 3". The only two problems I can see are that the gun is rifles 1-38 and so shoots lighter bullets best, and I am losing about 100 fps velocity on my hunting loads, I hope the deer don't notice.

I had several micro groove 44 MARLINS cut to 16.5 inches before the "mini guide guns" came out. Two got stolen in a burglary and my step-son got the last one when I got interested in the COWBOY II with 24 inch octagon barrels. Lately I've been thinking rather fondly of the "little guys" because they carried almost as easy as a pistol and hit a lot harder. If you loan a Marlin 1894 for a Missouri deer rifle, they are hard to get returned--especially when they take down a white tail like a sledge hammer blow!

If you're a John Wayne fan, he made a little speech to Ricky Nelson in RIO BRAVO about why his character carried the carbine; same topic to Robert Mitchum in EL DORADO. Jeff Cooper discussed them a bit in THE GARGANTUAN GUN SITE GOSSIP, VOLUME I. He thought them to be a good idea in places where pistol permits were required and limited mostly to the POLITICALLY CONNECTED.

In 1975 I bought a '94 trapper 15" from an old timer who used to cowboy in Arizona back in the '20's. It was illegal at that time, being an inch short, so I kept pretty quiet about it. I gave $165 for it which was quite a bit at that time. After several years I had an offer of $900 and let it go. I saw it's twin at Tulsa last month and they were asking $3600. When I sold it the buyer was leaving and I asked him if he'd like to have the saddle scabbard that came with it. I gave him the custom made 15 inch El Paso Saddlery scabbard.

I have a Model 94 Wrangler and she is a fine lever gun.
In the interest of correctness I believe John Wayne used a Model 92.
