View Full Version : It is SO STINKING HOT!!!

It is so stinking hot here that my CONCRETE driveway actually buckled! I still can not believe that it happened but it did. My drive is over 400 foot long and it goes down one hill and up the other. Well at the top by the house it actuall lifted 1 1/2 inches off the gound! I was a rod buster ( think rebar in concrete) for 13 years and thought I had seen everything but boy was I wrong. The other thing that amazes me is that part of it is poured on top of another slap that had severly weathered. This creates a mechinical bond. So it did not only lift from expanison but it was also able to break the bond between the two slabs. Man, that is a lot of force! I knew I should have put in an expansion joint but I did not. Oh well stupid is as stupid does so I am going to have to break out the demolition saw.

I had 3 long days of firearms training on the range during that hot spell. No shade. -- Soaked in sweat above and below the protective vest! Even my leather boots were soaked through with sweat. I love shooting, but that training was the most difficult I have ever experienced.

I worked in Road & Bridge construction for 42+ yrs. in quality control and Project Management. I happened to see the concrete pavement blow out on Rte 29 south of Lynchburg, about 1972. I was about 1/2 mile away driving towards it and I thought the nearby quarry had put off a shot of dynamite until I saw the dust & debris fall back in the road. Then I thought someone had blown the pavement up. The pavement had been there for years. That's why I prefer asphalt pavement, it's flexible. I don't think the word terrorism had been coined then. The bad thing about your situation and I'm sure you know it, is the 2 separate courses have bonded and have different temps for expansion & contraction. If you cut an expansion joint, you need to go all the way through both courses or layers. I think I would put one in each 100 feet.
Good luck, Bob.

Everyone just needs to swelter and use a paper fan and a wet washcloth to stay cool.

I'm enjoying the 5 day work weeks only at the coal mine.
It's ok if it's hot out, it'll only last a few more months then it'll be cool with fall and winter approaching.

I thank you all for being considerate to my not wanting to go back to 6 day work weeks again by leaving the air off. :bigsmyl2: :kidding:

Oh and P.S.......I only have my air on in the house, and out in the shop for the last 3 weeks, because I'm patronizing the power plant that 10mi to the west of me, because i'm trying to get a job there and get out of the mines, plus it's hot out and I'm used to 68* temps in the darkness :bigsmyl2:

And to the east, up the the mountains they've got one been burning two weeks, can't get control. and the BLM won't let us fight fires on their land -- say it's "natural"....

Was teaching a driver safety class today; one of the ladies in the class said she was following a car in the southeastern part of the state, saw the guy flick a cigarette out the window, it landed in the median -- and it just EXPLODED she said. The wind caught the sparks, jumped the interstate, caught fire in the prairie and had flames in the air 20 or 30 feet almost instantly! The guy who started it just kept driving. They stopped, called it in, the sheriff said somebody else had called it in and they were sending out crews -- I don't know what's the matter with people! They just don't have any idea how fast and furious the range fires are, and how quickly they blow up and spread. Saw the remnants of one on the way to the next town today, just west of town. Burned right up to a bunch of houses in the country; but they were still standing. Bet there were a lot of rapid heartbeats around there for a while!

According to historical averages, this should be the last year of the hard draught. Remember '80-84? Four years of practically no rain (it killed most of the Texas Persimmon and Black Cherry trees on my property), then the floods of '85-87. Same way in the 90s. Three-four years of blistering hot and no ran, then a year or two of floods.

So if you invest in a swamp cooler, do it now and plan to sell it next year or make a canoe out of it!

I'll gladly trade some of our cool for your hot. Two weeks back it was in the mid 40's in the morning and we were still getting a dusting of snow on the mountain tops, "highs" were in the 50's. This week it's barely 50 in the morning and only high 50's mid day. I don't so much mind the cool as the clouds and rain/drizzle that are causing it.

We were taking pictures by the big cross. I wanted to take a few more pictures and my wife said no way. It was 10% above zero and the wind was blowing at something like Mach 1. We jumped into the car and pointed it west at a speed of Mach 2.

In Madison Wisconsin almost every day over 90 results in a section of highway heaving

the sections of concrete are generally 10 foot by 10 foot with expansion joints every 10 feet but when they all expand , the one with the least room goes boom and heaves inches to a foot

it causes many accidents, only 1 that i have heard of this year but it still june , i recall one day when IIRC 16 happened in 1 day , the crews just couldn't get to them fast enough when they do they make a cut bust it out and cold pack it in till they can fix it right later

4.6,,, So you and the dog woke up,,,, big deal.
When they get up around 7.0, I start checking for stuff that fell over.
I have been through dozens including the big one in Landers a few years back. That one was spectacular and a real treat to witness. Huge boulders rolling down rocky slopes and dust clouds as far as you could see. It is so cool watching the houses and other surface items, lift up and down with the waves as they go across the country side.
We were camped out on a Dune Buggie outing and drove to the top of a big hill to watch the show.
Still,,, nothing bad or scary.
The only thing I ever lost, was a small jar with six quail eggs.

It may not be as hot as someplaces here, but we've been putting shiny metal roofing on the last couple days.
Its 105* plus the hot metal. For a comparison, on the next 105* day, go stand in the middle of a 30ft square mirror. You feel the heat thru heavy metal gloves. If you touch it with bare skin it blisters almost instantly. Just like standing in a giant fry pan, literally.

Thank God we only have about 4 hours left of that.

A week ago Sunday we were setting at 113*.

Well Guys we're used to it here. 105 or 106 today. It's been that way for weeks. I'm lucky enough to be using a chainsaw for 5 or 6hrs a day everyday and will for the next 3 weeks or so.
When it's this hot and sunny you wear gloves, not because you have tender hands but because you can't pick anything up without them.

Maybe the rains will come soon, July/August, it's already humid for us.

Here's a nasty example of concrete buckling due to heat (some may have seen this) -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nf0l3NO-35U&feature=youtu.be
