Your boolit is the first mould I had for my 1895 Marlin. It is a great one and the one I've used the most. I've shot them through my rifle using a variety of powders and all have been acceptable. All though they are often recommended, I haven't done any shooting with your two powders with one exception: I've tried 13 grains of Red Dot and my notes say it is "very accurate."
Most of my shooting has been with XMP 5744, SR 4759, Unique, H322, and IMR 3031.

I just started reloading again about 6 months ago. I had a lot of prior experience a lifetime ago. Since I returned to reloading I've used IMR 4198, IMR 3031, and Hercules (not Alliant) 2400 in the 45-70. All did reasonably well and burned fairly clean. Accuracy was mediocre, but that's because I was loading cat-sneeze loads to ease back into the art and science of reloading. Also, I was loading for a model '86 Winchester that I had never fired before.
Just finished loading 50 rounds of 45-70 - 405 grn. LFNGC over 45.5 to 47.5 grains of IMR 3031. Hodgdon designates this as a Trapdoor load. However, I'm shooting it in a post 1900 carbine. Although the carbine is of the "Nickel Steel Barrel" vintage and can take more pressure, my shoulder has not aged as well as the gun.

A starting load of H 4198 should be 25gr. - 27gr.: It will be accurate, but with more recoil than say, a Unique load.

Hmm. My experience with the Lee 405 was dismal, had superb results with RCBS 405, gave
up on the Lee. Of course, molds that are "identical" are not necessarily, actually identical.

I use 16 gr of unique behind the Lee 405. No sizing, just lube and load. Works great out of my guide gun.

No, bigbear I haven;t had to. I was actually impressed with the way that load shoots. It does have a bean shooter trajectory though. Dead on at 50yds it drops a good 6" at a 100. I just picked a 350gr from Ranch Dog, that I'll work up something faster and flatter for it. That load is easy on the shoulder as well, with no leading.
