I'm looking for velocity vs. grains of Alliant 2400 powder for either 6" or 7.5" revolvers using Lyman 429421 or similar SWCs. Hoping to hear what velocity people are getting with: 18 gr, 19 gr, 20 gr, 21 gr, and 22 gr. Any data will be apprecisted. I know that many factors will affect what velocity *I* get! Many thanks, Ed

Lyman 429421-21.0gr 2400- Fed 150- Rem cases 1250 from a 4 inch S&W Mountain gun so close to 100 fps faster from a 71/2 incher.
Changing lot numbers can vary the velocity several fps either way.
No clear and exact numbers no matter what anyone says. It is just ball park figures.
Also lot number of primers can make a difference and brands of primers so again just ball park figures are all you are going to get.
The only way you will know with a certain set of components is to chronograph them yourself in your gun.

21 gr of 2400 with a store bought 240 lead SWC clocked at 1396 fps out of my S&W M29 6 ½” bbl.

18 gr of 2400 with a 240 Laser Cast RN clocked at 1380 out of my Ruger SBH 3 screw 7 ½”
Sorry I can’t help much more than this, I sold my S&W and my Ruger SBH 3-screw will not accept the Keith boolit in a Magnum case unless I crimp over the driving band.

I have done two tests where I found velocity did not go up with an increase of 2400, one with Special brass.

I've had at least 6 different batches of 2400 and found subtle differences in Energy and Extreme Spread with each of them.
6 inch barrel 250g 429421
18 1235
19 about 1300 (everyday load)
19 1259 today behind a 260g #503
20 1346
21 1501
22 1564 Redhawk or better. (high shot of string 1608, had one exception of 1455 minus that 1585 is a better number )
Combustion is more efficient/consistent as pressure goes up. I've done much more testing in 4" as that's my Bear Load. At 22g I've had Repeatable Extreme Spreads of 10 fps! Very Accurate.
A good fitting boolit will raise fps substantially.

My thanks to everyone who replied. For my whitetail deer hunting, I think I'll be happy with between 18 gr. and 20 gr. of the current Aliant 2400 behind my own Lyman 429421s. -Ed
