well i screwed up , i bought a lbt .475 400 lfn bullet mold off a fellow member without making sure it would work in my bfr .
as you can see in the pic the nose to fat to chamber .

i am going to guess that short of using .480 cases theres no way to make this bullet work .

bullets measure a very nice round 476.5 , throats are exacatly .476

before i resell this mold .. can anyone tell me if it will work in anything besides a .480 ruger

crimp groove is in the exact same location as the top crimp groove as the lee 400 mold i was wanting to replace

left is the lbt , right is the lee 400

I would be sure that the cylinder throats aren't short. .4765 should chamber IME

its hard to tell from the picture , but on the lbt more of the nose is full dia then the lee .

left is the lee bullet , right is the lbt

I know, I use a lot of LBT's and that is why I think the problem is in the thraots of the cylinder

jwp , can you explain to me what you mean by the thoats being to short ?
im afraid its going right over my head .

my mind is just telling me that with more of the nose being full dia like it is the bullet was designed for the .480 ruger and not the longer linebaugh case .

after taking a couple rough measurements these would chamber perfectly if i trim back a case

The throat in the cylinder is stopping the bullet and not allowing the loaded cartridge to chamber. A bullet with a smaller nose is not affected by this condition. Al of my 475's will chamber the bullet that you have

Size the bullet a smaller diameter (.4760") to fit the cylinder throats. The end of your chamber/beginning of your cylinder throat is too short for a front drive band/nose that is as wide as the LBTs. The Lee's front drive band/nose is simply not as wide and why it fits/chambers with a .4765" bullet diameter. When sized you can easily see where the front drive band ends and the ogive begins which I think you've already noted.

rob thats exactly the problem .. i just did a very poor job of describing it .

to be able to reliably chamber this bullet i would have to size it down to .475 i dont have a sizing die for this bullet so i pushed a few threw the cylinder .
.476 would still be to tight once the cylinder is fouled

i dont want to either shoot an undersized buller or have to shorten all of my cases to .480 ruger lenght to use it .

i also dont want to sell the mold to someone making the same mistake i did by not making sure the nose profile will work for them

It's not a problem selling the mold just make sure when you sell it you describe things very well i.e. bullet meplat, weight with what alloy, bullet length, front drive band etc. Many that shoot LFN and WFN designs have to size to or .0005 under cylinder throat diameter for them to chamber.

If you will cast a few and send them to me, I will size/lube them to .476 for you to try. I believe that once they are sized and lubed your trouble will disappear. PM me if you are interested.

My 475 fa gun actually prefers bullets at .475 and both of my 500 linebaughs shoot better at .511 then at 512. Give the bullet a try and it might suprise you.

Just have Lee make you a size die. The boolit is good, just fit it.
I question your measuring. Every BFR I measured (8 so far) has .4765" throats and .475" grooves. All use a .476" boolit.
Leave the gun alone, keep the mold. You are lucky to have a boolit you can fit. The worst are under size boolits.
Subsonic has a mold almost exact to what you showed and he sent me some test boolits. I sized .476" and they shoot super.
Don't use .480 brass, not as accurate. Fix the boolit so it is .0005" under throat.
