I've been getting ready for a prairie dog hunt and got a barrel for an AR. I went with a 20 cal chambered for the 20 Practical. It's a 3 grove Pac Nor with a 1-10 twist. I've tried 32 grain vmax, 32 grain Nosler and 40 grain vmax. The 40 vmax seems better at distance.

One thing is the lack of noticeable recoil, you can see what the J word did on target through the scope. I have been shooting small water bottles at about 250 yards and you can see them blow through the scope. It would fun to catch a coyote out there.

I thought about the .204 Ruger but went with the .20 Practical. Just neck down .223 brass using bushing dies, load and shoot. Pretty neat way to get the AR platform shooting lighter Jwords fast. The trajectory that I'm seeing is a inch high at 100 and a little below the mark at 250.

I got a deal on a 204 ruger barrel for my AR. So far I have only shot it from the bench. It seems to shoot the 32 to 40 from various brands of factory equally well. Thats if I am doin my part.

I was looking at a 20 pract. bbl for my ar. Mind me asking what you paid for yours? Thanks!

Yes it was $417.00 shipped from White Oak Armament. It has the "no turn neck" with almost .002 per side of neck expansion using Lake City brass. 24" Varmit contour. It came ready to install and it had a gas block too.

I'm not sure how long the throat is, just seating j words to fit the magazine. I'm using my service rifle lower with an A2 butstock and a 2 stage trigger.

The first picture is H4198 with 32 Vmax, too bad it doesn't cycle the action! The second was H335 during barrel break in with 40 grain Vmax

I don't have one in an AR but do have a Browning Ultra varminter in 204 ruger. It is a lot of fun to shoot, and seems to prefer 40gr bullets over the 32's. Low recoil and pretty easy on the powder. What's not to like?????

I have a 14" 20 Tactical TC Contender and I had a Savage 204 ruger. If you are purposely going after coyotes use a heavier bullet. I had a bad experience with the 204 and 32gr bullets on coyote I shot in the chest a little over 200 yards.

20 Tactical and Practical are both based on the 223 case with the Tactical slightly improved. Any way about it they are all 4000+ fps rounds with 32gr bullets.

Maybe try Benchmark powder....clean and cycles the action well...use it in my DPMS in 204 Ruger....waiting for more funds to scope it, using a 3-9 to get a few down the tube. It will on the p-dawg trip next year.

I've yet to play with the 20 tactical. However, doing load development for my 204 with Benchmark powder, and trying both the 32gr and 40gr V-max, the 32gr had a slight edge on accuracy, so I loaded them for dogs.

BTW the farthest P-dog taken was at 503yds in a full value 12-15mph wind.

I had to lead into the wind, but he couldn't tell if it was 32gr or 40gr.........:drinks:

These loads are moving at 3950 with an SD of 12fps over 10rds.

One inch high at 100yds, and it's an aim-right-on endeavour out to 300yds. It almost felt unfair.

I have the exact same setup.

I went to the dog shoot in south central South Dakota. The first day of shooting hit 107*, it was pretty warm out there. I was there for 3 days and ran of out of ammo in the afternoon of the last day.

Between 17 Mach IV and 20 Practical I had about 800 rounds. For the AR in 20 Prac. it had a Burris 4.5 x 14 scope and I fed magazines with stripper clips. The 17 MIV Contender has a 6.5 x 20 Nikon and a custom 20" barrel. I used 17 Fireball brass and had to trim them for length and neck turn them for proper expansion.

The 17 showed no mercy out past 150 yards and the 20 Prac with the 40 grain Vmax was good past 350. On the last day we were literaly behind a barn shooting in a cow yard and there were dogs from one fence the other. They haven't had much pressure so you could say there was alot of hits on P dogs.

The only time the AR jammed was when brass wasn't clearing the brass catcher.

I find my M77 204 with 32gn Vmax pleasingly explosive on rabbits. It's only got the basic 3-9 VX1 scope so they starting looking pretty small past 300.
