I just picked up this NEI .476 mold on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/140772516407?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

I was curious if anyone on the board has used this same type mold and if so any advice on if WW will cast appropriately sized bullets in the mold? Will be loaded and used for soft targets, deer, pigs and possibly a few coons and armadillos :)

I just joined and have spent the past 4 hours reading with more planned. I appreciate any advice.

Thank you.

Welcome and it should! I do not cast for the .470 but shot one once. Clint

What kind/make .470 do you have? That bullet should work great for a practice load. You should be able to push it to regulation velocity (using ww lead alloy) with out any problem. You can also try powder puff loads with Trail Boss.

It is a stainless steel barrel made for my TC Encore by Virgin Valley Custom. 26" long. I have shot some 480 Ruger bullets in it but there are to light. I don't have to worry about regulating the barrel or anything. But was curious if wheel weights would smear or would give good accuracy at standard 470 nitro speeds.

I asked the fine folks at Ballisti-Cast to make me a gas checked FN 500 gr bullet beginning with their #1431 design. They produced it. Casts lovely projectiles w wheel weights.

I use a load of 45.0 gr of AA5744 with the gas checked bullet sided to 0.476" using Carnauba Red as the lubricant.

Regulates in my Searcy Field Grade .470 NE double rifle.

I see no metal fouling, and clean up is easy. The load is easy on cases. Is running about 1800 fps. Kills deer very nicely thank you.

Just wondering what your TC Encore weighs I am thinking the recoil could be “STIFF” with full power loads. I don’t think you will have problems with leading just use a good lube.

It weighs 9.8 lbs. It wears a custom VVC thumbhole stock that helps tame the recoil along with a 1" Sims Recoil pad. Overall with the few cast loads i have shot far it is not like a 12 gauge recoil but it is stout. More of a real heavy shove than a sharp biting recoil. So what is the recommended lube then? Thus far for my project i have the mold, Lee melting pot and that si all, still need to get handles, lube, sizer, etc.

I have been most pleased with White Label's Carnauba Red lube. No metal fouling. Barrels clean with 3 or fewer patches.

Yeah, the .470 NE does not have the sharpness of recoil (speed) exhibited by some other chamberings ... but it is stout. A light 3 or 3 1/2" 12 gauge with max buckshot or slug loads is worse. Personally I am not that recoil averse, but not crazy either. The .470 NE is a good max for me in my old age.

Thank you for the load info. I have an early Searcy Field Grade and would like to try casting some boolits. I have been using Hawks for reduced load shooting and I am just about out.

That mold really, really needs a muzzleoader.
