Finally have a little free time to report .243 progress. Last weekend’s shooting results.
I must say that I am really having fun loading cast for my son's .243. It seems that the loads either shoot real real good or not so good at all. At least that's the way it went today.
Deputy Al's load of 12.5 gr. 2400 and my 85 gr. Saeco really shoot great. I upped the charge to 13.5 gr. and still shooting great. I had not too much luck with H-4227. I used 16 and then 17 gr with about 2" groups @ 50 yds. I am wondering if this is one of those powders that you have to get near the top for it to shoot good? I am using a boolit 10 gr. lighter than Deputy Al’s also I realize.
Another load which worked great was 14.5 gr. H-4198 and 16.0 gr. of the same powder. I got groups as small as ¾” with the 16.0 gr. load and then I ran out. I didn’t know what would shoot and what would not. All the different loads shoot pretty close to same point of aim. I was using Lar's Carnauba Red lube.
Actually, if I would call 2” a good group, then I would say they all shoot passably but seeing the little ¾” cluster was kind of rewarding. Anyway, my tax return money is going to be spent on a worthwhile gun, a .243 of my own. Maybe a nice .32 magnum will come along....
