So my dad and I just got back from a small gunshop that we stop in from time to time, and we got a deal ( I think). The guys there said they got all the stuff from a gentleman who was getting out of reloading and they were selling his stuff real cheap. Here is what we got:

22 boxes of jacketed bullets ( priced from $3 to $7 a box)
65 boxes of primers ( each box was $1)
6 cans of powder ( $7-$9 a pound)
RCBS 7.62x54R dies ( $20 with shell holder)

Some of the bullets are funny too, there are some Herters 236 grain 8mm bullets, would we be able to find a load for 8x57 with these?

Are any of the boxes/cans worth money?

Thanks, Thomas

I've seen alot of people with old powder cans floating around, well not alot but a few anyway. They have all said pretty much the same thing and that is they've found them at flea markets or for the asking from a friend.

So as far as if they are worth money all I can say is this, it's worth what ever the other person is willing to pay for it.

I think the Gew 88 shot a 235 Grain Round nose bullet.. perhaps older manuals have loads listed for them

Nah, that was no deal, that's a steal! Even if that was $1 a sleeve on the primers, it's still cheap.

A quick search only showed loads in 8x57 up to 220 grains but I'm sure that there's some data out there. When in doubt, start out low.

40 year old primers go bang just like new ones and cost a third less

The original M88 cartridge was loaded with a 226gr Roundnose design with a diameter of .318 versus the newer 154gr S Patrone .323 design bullet that was used in the next evolution of the 8mm Mauser cartridge that everyone is familiar with from the Mauser 98 rifle.

You might want to measure that diameter of those bullets. If they are the .318 diameter bullet, than some of the Gewehr 1888 collectors might pay top dollar for those bullets as thier barrels are set up for that bullet.

Look in your Barnes manual and use their 250 gr data, work up like any load you do.

Thanks for all the replies, looks like I may not be shooting those 8mm bullets in the mausers I have, because they do measure out at .318.

You can sell the .318 bullets easily. Try a military surplus board and where there are German GEW 88 shooters.

Actually the Herter's bullets and boxes are collector's items. Got go E-Bay and look at what they are getting for them. Herter's stuff was usually excellent, and I bought a HUGE amount back in the day and still have a bunch of it that still works fine.

westley richards also made some early 318's with 318 bbl's
quite a few german walking rifles floating around with 318 bores also.
