Folks--I have been single loading 311291 in my newly acquired 336 in .30-30. My charge is 34g of H-4831. Velocity is 1778 fps. I prolly have about 10 lbs of the old $.50/lb stuff, and it's still good! Accuracy is good so far with the open sights, but my distance has been only 25YDS! The question is....can this bullet/powder combination be safely loaded in the tubular magazine without fear of recoil setting off a primer? The only other .30 cal boolits I have are a Lyman 311466, a Lee 150, and a Lyman 311410, and they "appear" more pointy than the 311291.

The answer to your question is... Yes! 311291 has been a recommended bullet for the 30-30 levergun since it's design in 1905. IIRC it was designed with the 30-30 in mind. There is no telling how many have been put throught the magazines and chambers of Winchester and Marlin leverguns.

The 30-30 does not produce enough recoil, even with full snort loads for the blunt round nose to be a problem in the tubular magazine. Now put the same style bullet in a 45-70 and you can indeed have problems.

Thanks Charles,
I'll now proceed to load 'em up. After all these years, this was my first .30-30. Couldn't pass it up for the asking price!--Shuz
