View Full Version : Need Help With .45 Colt Ruger/Plus P Loads

I recently ordered a Rossi 92 Lever Gun in .454 Casull. I should get it late this week.

I really don't want to start off shooting full load .454 rounds, in fact that is not the reason I wanted a .454 Casull. I wanted it for the ability to shoot the .454 Casull loads, but mostly for safely shooting hot .45 Colt Loads.

I know some of the hot .45 Colt loads are often referred to as Ruger Loads and sometimes .45 Colt +P Loads.

If anyone is familiar with or maybe has a favorite load in those categories, I'd love to hear what they are and your comments on such loads. I'll probably stick with 250gn RNFP cast bullets and switch to 255gn Keith style cast bullets for my hand guns.

I was speaking with a friend last night and he said that he has read somewhere that someone was using and really liked 250gn RNFP cast bullets over 12.0gn of Unique and/or Universal for .45 Colt in a rifle. I have searched a little but cannot find anything on such a load. Any thoughts???

Any suggestions and/or comments will be appreciated.

12 grs of Unique is hot in the .45 Colt loads IMHO. Tough on cases. Go with a slower powder like Accurate #9, or 2400. My Ruger likes 15 to 16 grs of A #9 with an RCBS 255 SWC, I hunt with a little hotter load but worked up slowly in my particular gun.

If it was me I'd go up in weight to at least 300gr. and us a slower powder 2400,enforcer, h110. something along those lines

To me a heavy 45 colt Ruger only load is 300-330 gr cast over 21-22gr of H-110 for ~1200 fps.

The typical 250 gr load with 10gr of unique is really a mid level load, not a hot load. If you want to push a 250 gr, use 2400.

I'd be concerned using 12 gr of unique as typically 10gr unique is the top load I've seen published and I'd be concerned going hotter with unique as it will build pressure much faster than the slower powders, i.e. you can go from drops from the cylinder with ease to needs to be pounded out of the cylinder by just adding another grain.

Others I have spoken with, off line, have suggest I move up to a 300gn or 325gn bullet, as well. Now I need to do some research on doing that as well.

Thanks

Do you have any idea as to the fps of that round out of either a 4"/6" SA or a rifle?

Blue Dot powder. It is awesome on Ruger only loads.

Ya, I know! I have been looking for one for over a year now. They were discontinued about 4 or 5 years ago. Anyway, Dogg, on this forum spotted a few that were listed last week, all NIB. Thankfully he let me know. He bought one, as did I. I am not sure if there are any others. They are from the same seller on GunBroker.Com

I think that you'll find that a load of 7.2 gr 231 will get you the factory (Win) loading for the 45 Colt. approx. 900 fps in a 7 1/2" barrel. It's very accurate and a very mild load (12 - 14k).

My BH shoots a 335 gr bullet at 1270 fps with 23.0 gr of 296. Sierra's accuracy load with a 300 gr jacketed is 21.5 gr H110/296, (I haven't tried it) it clocks 1500 in a 16" barrel. My most accurate (1" @ 25 yd) RH load is 25.0 gr H4227 and a 300 gr jacketed at approx. 1400 fps.
