The word vintage just aint enough of an apology for this item:

Exactly how deep does the "surface" go?

To an engineer, "surface" is an infinetely thin, two-dimensional concept. You make an excellent point.

One mans Vintage is another mans garbage. 310 dies are so thin, I think the answer to surface rust questions is: Right through to the other surface!

Along with vintage the seller should have mentioned they went down with the Titanic also.
