I started looking for a shorter barrel (18 - 20 inch) for my 870
3" Magnum and noticed that some of the barrels I viewed online looked different at the chamber end.

Mine has a much longer tang (if that's the right term).

Here is my 870 (2 3/4" chamber) and here is another that I pulled off the web.

I have seen a lot of 870 barrels in my life, and they all had the short tang.

Are you 100% sure that your barrel is meant for an 870? It just doesn't look right to me.

Well my barrel is marked Remington, but I noticed it's an Imp Cyl. That got me to thinking. My original barrel was a Modified, so....
I pulled the barrel off my son's 1100 and low and behold, it looks like the one I posted.

Seems I picked up my son's old barrel instead of mine. Problem solved!!! Almost.. I know need to find my old barrel!

Thanks Robert for the clue.

PS... it does fit my 870.

The barrels with the longer chamber insert tang are from early production models of the 870, I have been told. They revamped the design in the `70`s as I recall to use the shorter tang with the same strength required, though a longer tang barrel may not work in a newer made action. An example of this is the redesigned 20 ga. model 870 from a standard model to the new design Wingmater "lightweight" model with the shortened barrel tang.Robert

Left picture - 1100 barrel. Right picture - 870 barrel. 1100 barrel might fit, but will it eject the case? I suspect the longer tang will cover the ejector spring.

What do you want a short barrel for? If for home defense it's fine, but if you want it to print good tight patterns, you need one with a choke, as most of the short barrels are cylinder bore and will print 1' pattern at 10 yards.
