Savage 340 30-30 range update

I am going to experiment with this Lee mold further!....seems to shoot tigher groups....I did notice that the front of the boolits above the crimp groove measured differently
for the Lyman #311291 it measured 0.303 dia.
for the Lee C312 it measured 0.305 dia. this forced me to seat the boolit deeper so I was not jamming into the lands.

the only thing I didn't like about using he Lee cast boolit was that its cast dia. was .312-.313....which meant that I was sizing (swaging) down considerably to get to 0.309

Reduce the powder charge and load a few up as cast, sometimes bigger is better. Trim the case a little shorter to get a good crimp in the groove, if you just kiss the lands that's fine.

a bit of engraving is good.
i use a loverign design in my 340 and seat it out as far as i can [till it is just not touching]
if i use the rcbs 150 fn instead i engrave the nose in the rifling.
you can size larger than 309 too the gun won't mind [i go 310] but i'd bet 311 would work just fine. [i have used 312 in my 340 with no problems]
taking .003 off your boolit is changing the driving bands before you fire it.

Bellmouth a FIRED case and see how big of a boolit will slip into it. That's the largest size you can shoot in your rifle. It's best not to have the boolits any bigger than the entrance to the throat itself so they don't shave lead off the drive bands going in there, but as long as the boolit is just a titch smaller than the "funnel" at the end of the chamber, you can use boolits much larger than groove diameter to good effect.

OK....range update...I got out early this morning and shot 20 rounds using the Lee boolit but sized to 0.311

very good grouping at 50, 75, and 100 yds !!!!.....this combination is a keeper

My 325b likes the lee 170 fp, 29 & 30 grs of 748 looks like your groups. These are as cast with Bac lube & g/c's, in fire formed w-w cases, seated to work through the mag. Scope is a 2x7 redfield tracker on a "bubba'ed " mount ( like this when I got it).

Need to wait for the weather to cool down to finish load work.

.311 is my standard starting point for .30 cal.

Good results! W748 works great with condom bullets in .30-30 for me, and also in my
.45-70 hunting load at about 1750 fps under 405 gr boolits or bullets.

I started shooting cast bullets with a Savage 340 in the late 1960s. Time to get it out and shoot those lyman 311466 pan lubed bullets again...

The Savage 340 would make a great 7.62X39 bolt action rifle.
It should still be an economical action to manufacture.

My wife would like to use this as a deer rifle this fall so it's time to get it out of the safe and begin experimenting. Glad other forum users have already laid some of the ground work for me.

The Savage 340 is one of the most under rated guns ever. I purchase one new in 1968 and have come respect the accuracy that it usually produces with any bullet and load. if you snug up the barrel band too tight or have the fore end touching the barrel between the muzzle and the barrel band accuracy can go west. Also check to see if the main recoil lug is bottoming out rather than having a bit of space underneath it.

Alright, ya done got me interested in savage 340's. I never heard of them before. I am looking on GB at some. Whats a fair price for one and what is the twist rate on the 30-30 version.

I have 2 of those guns.
The SAECO 160 grain for the 30-30 works wonderfully. It casts nearly .313, is heat treated and sized to.311.or .312 with a gas check , and pushed by 25 to 26 grains Reloader 7.
holds about an inch at 50, and never missed a pig out to 100 yards, so I'm good to go.
Bullet works equally well in premicrogroove Marlins.
