In 1989 I got an '86 made in 1892. It was restored/refinished/re-case-hardened but was rebarreled with a Lilja CM 1-20 twist 26" octagon.

Gorgeous rifle, added a Lyman Tang Peep rear. Haven't shot it much except with mild IMR -4198 loads.

Any suggestions for loads with an Lyman 457122 Gould HP?

Yes, I know I owe pictures....They'll be along.

And I did search, too.

John

Have one just like it also born in 1892 and in the same caliber.
I have been using 45-70 Trapdoor load information from Hodgdon.
Don't see the need for real top ended loads.
50.0gr of Varget, CCI LRP and a 400gr CB gets me 1550fps.
That's more than enough for my needs.

I have an 1886 45-90 from the same era. I shoot a 300grain gas check from RCBS in mine. Start out with 42 grains of IMR 4198 and go up from there. If you are going to shoot jacketed bullets in her, it will take a stronger dose. 4198 is the best I have found for mine

I have seven 45-70 rifles of modern vintage.

I'm a 47-70 nut!:bigsmyl2:

In my Sharps, Rolling Block and 1885 HighWall, I shoot big heavy, 535g pure lead bullets over Black Powder. Nothing compares to the accuracy of BP with these rifles.

But in my Winchester 1886, Marlin 1895, Custom Double Rifle, etc......NOTHING shoots as well as Ranch Dog 425g Gas Check bullets with RL7 or 4198.

Amazing accuracy with this bullet simply tumble lubed with Alox or Rooster Red.

I run velocity around 1600fps.

The Winchester 1886 Take Down is easily the most accurate. It will group under 1" for five shots, at 100 yards with a Beech front sight and a Marbles rear tang.

Primer pockets might have loosened as I saw the primer back out a little.
Starline brass is new. I'll see how it handles the load. I'll back it down a bit.

Well, he thinks it is awful purdy.

Several of the guys thought it should go home with them.
