I recently picked up a well used Savage M-24 22LR/410. I am considering having it re chambered to 22WMR. Your thoughts ?

I know 22LR ammo is bunches cheaper, but I don't see this as a "go out shooting cans" gun, more of a behind the seat of the pickup "useful" gun. As far as hunting with it, probably use it for Grouse.

Here in the east, Savage Mod. 24's are very collectable. Don't think I would modify it. Savage made the same gun in a 22 Mag. over 410 & 20 ga.

You want more power look for a insert for the .410 barrel
- I'd go reloadable 22 hornet more power use of cast boolits and price wise you might even
be ahead of 22 Mag RF at $12.00 - $14.00 per box of 50.

The regular .22 long rifle generally uses a .222 groove dia. while the .22 Mag uses a .224. Also pressures are a lot higher to begin with on the Mag. You might be creating a pressure machine and who know what the accuracy would be. I think I would leave this one alone.

i don't know if it would make much difference, but the LR has a 1-16 twist vs. 1-14 for the mag. just another thought.

My 22/20 gauge is quite accurate. I don't know that I would mess with it. I have a bag of 22 lr & 20 gauge shot shells, slugs and buckshot ready to go. They are great guns.

I wouldn't do it. Twist and barrel specs are wrong. You can't undo that change with a new barrel or anything.

I'd be more concerned with whether or not the .22LR bbl's C/L will align the larger-in-diameter .22WMR rim with the firing pin like a barrel meant for a .22WMR & spaced accordingly would.

It'd bite, if you rechambered it, then it wouldn't fire at all, or inconsistantly due to firing pin hitting off the rim too much towards the center of the cartrifge.

My thanks to all. I think I'll leave it as it is. I have a few 22RF around and a 410 loader.
