Ok, we know it's a J-type shell holder. My question is what is the purpose of the extra slot milled into the top?

Maybe for a primer feed?

That's pretty much much my thought as well. Who's press/priming system?

That looks like a Lyman E-Z Loader shell holder.

I've seen pictures of this press with the primer feeder attached (don't see many with the primer feed), and it works just as it looks...slides a primer under the case as it sits in the shellholder.

Roundnose, I think that you are correct. I have only seen two pictures of the EZ and neither was detailed enough for me to be sure. So lets see who will be the 1st person to post a better picture of the EZ?

No press, but have a couple sets of dies --

Lyman EZ-Loader priming shellholder. Too much work and not enough time to get pictures right now. Wild weekend with wife starts this morning.

That s an early, first model design. It fits the right front die station and lets the primers slide in from the feeder magazine. It did not work well as it allowd a constant flow of primers causing jams. It was replaced with a new design utilizing a spring "gate" that had to be pushed with a finger or thumb to let one primer at a time into the die.
