Hello,

The Lee 311-200 gr mold that I have throws out WW slugs with a .302-.303 diameter nose .

To chamber the round in my .308 the slugs need to be seated way down in the case.

How can I make the front 1/4" or so of the slug a smaller diameter so that it will stick out further into the barrel and not so deep into the case.

Thanks.

Kirill

Look up member SmokemJoe for his 'bump' die. It can do that, I use one from time to time in my K31.

Buckshot will make you a nose sizing die. Send him a PM and tell him the diameter you want the nose to be.

I had a 311291 that was casting bullets with fat noses ( at least for my current stock of .30 cal. rifles ), so I had him make me one. They work 101 % perfect.

Thanks Dutch,

I found it. There's a good thread on just this subject.

hollowpoint mold service offers an Eagan type taper die for your lubesizer that would work for you.I have several originals and they are hard to beat. They taper the front band of the body to fit your throat and can size the nose as well.they are about $35 i believe and the best available

Most of the solutions will cost more than your mold did. You might just want to try one of the lighter Lee molds for $20 before you spend more on something else.

true but once you have used a taper die or taper bump die you realize how much better some design shoot once they fit better. It actually can reduce (GULP) the number of molds you actually need.So in a way its cheaper.I have used them for over 15 years and would hate to not have the ability to massage the front end of a bullet to fit .Accuracy improvement can be just a bit to a amazing.

A taper die for a caster is a very good investment. I bought an Eagan years ago and I have used it with three or four rifles./beagle

I agree with Elkins45, unless you are dead set on the 200 grainer. A good choice is the Lee C312-155-2R. It sizes nicely to .308-.312, and the double radius ogive lets the nose dive under the rifling. There is a 160 grain tumble lube design as well with a 2R ogive. They also work well with the short neck of the 308 Win..

to fat for most commercial chambers in my experience. In my Russian 308 Siaga it fits well but needs to tapered to fit my non throated Remington and Winchester 308's.

Another possible solution is to try a softer alloy I'd suggest 20:1. It may cast a little smaller, and there's a good chance that it seats easier and can be extracted without leaving the bullet stuck.

Another cheap fix you can try is to heavily smoke the nose portion of the cavity. I did this to my newest lee mould as it was dropping real big applied smoke then cast some and then gave it another dose of butane soot .between that and softening up the alloy a bit I got it .003 smaller in dia.
